2 days post-op. :(
I am 2 days post-op, but it feels like a week. I feel like I have been in a daze and the gas pains are SOOOO horrid. How long does it take to go away? I vomited 4 times after getting home. I had issues with anesthesia (they can NEVER wake me up) and I have NO appetite to speak of (first time ever ) I am worried about drinking too much, taking pills and vomiting some more. I am just plain anxious about this. I didnt think I would be, but I am. I thought I was more than ready, but now, I am so nervous for some reason. I think because of the vomiting. I dont want to slip my band and the pain was HORRIBLE while I was retching...my poor incisions managed to keep together with steri-strips, but, ouch!!! I have only really had some water, SF juice and broth. I need to get something in me, but I am afraid of puking again. Did anyone else feel this way??? I have been trying to get up and walk around, but feel so badly that i dont have any energy. Has anyone else experienced this?
Not trying to be a baby, but I sure feel like it!

Sounds pretty normal to me, Missy. I didn't have the band, I had gastric bypass, but that's pretty much how I felt. What did your doctor tell you about protein drinks? You probably need to get some protein in you. No energy is pretty normal and it may actually take a few weeks for you to get back to normal again, but it should get better and better every day. You do need to walk frequently, even if it's just short distances. But get lots of rest in between little walks. I actually didn't have much gas pain with my bypass for some reason, but I just recently had my gall bladder removed, and I had gas pain then. Did I ever! Walking will really help with the gas. A heating pad might help, too. It should go away in a couple days. Try to hang in there.

I feel so badly for you. I actually just had the bypass but I was banded in 2006 and experienced alot of what you're going through. The only thing that troubles me is the vomiting. You shouldn't be. Retching (besides being horribly painful) is not good for the band. What has your sugeon said? If you're not keeping much of anything down please call your doctor. Vomiting is not normal.
As far as the gas, it was much worse when I had the band then this time around. The only thing that worked for me, after sucking on boxes of Gas-X strips, was the very gentle laxative Senekot. I used it this time too and it really does help. Walking really helps too and I understand you feel too weak to walk.
I would call your doctor first before you do anything. I hope this helps.

I'll add that if you are vomiting much, there are prescription medications that can help. Like Lana said, call your doctor. (You can call even though it is Sunday. There will be an answering service and someone will be oncall.)

Thank you so much. I actually am feeling much better after resting today. I have managed small walks to the bathroom/kitchen/around the living room, just to get up and move. I have not vomited anymore. I think maybe i may have taken in too much fluid at once and then I took my "normal" meds on an empty stomach and that may have contributed to it too. I did manage some additional fluids today besides water. I just have a headache that wont quit. I just want to move past this stage to the healing stage and start that journey. I have wanted this for SOOO long! I know this is an embarrassing question, did any of you have probs not having a bowel movement? I am sure it is because Ihave not had any "real" food. I cannot tell you guys how much I appreciate having someone to talk to that understands.
Thanks and blessings to you all!

I know a lot of people have problems with constipation after a gastric bypass. I'm not really sure about the band. I actually had the opposite problem, a couple days after my surgery I got the worst diarrhea I have ever had in my life! Which my doctor said was normal too. But anyway, you're not eating, so that could cause a change in your bowel habits. Also, a lot of pain medications can cause constipation. I wouldn't really worry about it for a few days, unless you are uncomfortable and feel like you need to go but can't. If it goes on after a few days or if you are uncomfortable, you should be able to take something over-the-counter. You might need to check with your doctor about what to take, though, unless it says in your paperwork somewhere.

I thank you ladies so much. I am going to try Senekot today. Did you have pain in your left lower rib beside what I suppose is the band? It hurts to take a deep breath, laugh, cough, etc. I hope that it is normal and that my band did not slip during my vomiting. Plus, I feel MUCH better today and the gas is going away. I am very excited!

I didn't have the band, and I'm not sure if that is a pain most people experience or not. My guess is, it's normal. I know a lot of people with RNY have more pain on the left side. I was told they do most of the work in that area. I don't know if that's true for the band or not, though.

Yes, that's the evil GAS devil! Your band should be fine. I'm glad you're feeling better. If you have any other questions you can always PM me. Good Luck!
