Fever/Regurg years after survey
I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 1998. Over the years my biggest challenge has been sleeping. I finally got an adjustable bed and can sleep almost sitting up. Two things happen while I sleeP:
Coughing - I will cough and cough and bring up a very yellow mucous which I spit out. I take Tums and after doing this for some hours I finally get to sleep. In the morning I will wake up with a low grade fever 100-101, feeling achy and like I have the flu. The symptoms last most of the day and are gone the next day. Anyone have this happen?
Fluid - Another thing which has just started happening over the past year is, again while sleeping, fluid coming out of my nose from my stomach. It usually happens if I have eaten later or a bit too much. It is unexpected and all of a sudden fluid is coming out of my nose, enough that it is all over me and would amount to a tablespoon or up to three. Again - anyone have this?

Wow! Sorry, I don't have an answer. There aren't too many here who have had the VBG, but someone may chime in. What does your doctor say?

Doctor not around
The surgeon I had was a regular surgeon. I have since moved out of the area and so has he. My new Primary Care doctor is clueless about VBG (same as the lap band but older type of surgery) and tells me "you would know more about this than me". My daughters saw something on The View last week but I am having problems getting to the site so I decided to shop around for some support groups.

Mmmm, I would take care of this with an internist familiar with weight loss surgery. This is just not normal. Please see doctor SOOON!

Hi Joyce, I'm with Claire on this one. What you are describing most certainly isn't normal. You really need to get this checked out. I would have my pcp either refer me to another bariatric surgeon or at the least a GI doctor. It sounds like you really need to have some tests done to figure out what is going on.

Definately questions for a qualified physician. Find one, don't wait. Something serious may be going on.

I am not quite sure if this is the same thing that I had done, but I had gastroplasty about 10-12 yrs ago and just had to have a revision to the RNY. The dr and I came to this decision after going thru the upper gi and and egd to find out that the stoma where the band was placed had closed up with scar tissue and my staple line had pulled appart, basically causing my stomich to have a "shelf" where food would hit and then have to work its way down or back up. All said and done this was something that had to be taken care of sooner or later, I just chose sooner. Please go and see either a GI doc or barriatric doc and see what they can find out.
