Default heartburn 2 days out

Hi everyone. I am 2 days post op. My pain is more significant than I was told it should be. Especially bad is the heartburn...I burp a few times an hour, and immediately following the burp is really bad heartburn (or what I think is heartburn--could it be gas)...Does this last long? Has anyone else experienced it? Thanks for any responses!

Unhappy Hungry As Hell

thanx for the replies...i talked to my doctor about it and he said that its not heartburn, but esophagaeal spasms coming from the gas under my breastbone (doctor mumbo jumbo that i don't really understand)...anyway, i still have it but its getting better...

on a separate note, i am STARVING!!!!! i'm 4 days out now, 10 pounds gone, but i can't get over how hungry i am! i can drink normally and staying on this full-liquid diet isn't helping...the only protein thing i can tolerate is SF pudding and skim plus milk...i don't get full from anything...should i eat more than 4 ounces of these things for a meal?

i cry all day long because i miss food so much, but i know that 10 pounds lost should be thought of as a great job...i almost regret that i had the surgery now, because i'm more depressed than before the surgery.

has anyone else had this happen? how do you get through it? please help

I dont really miss food because my eating habits were terrible. I am still not getting a sence of being hungry or full. I am at day 9. I am on a better path though because before i didnt take vites or drink water and now i do both. Good luck to you just grab part of my rope and hang in there. We will be fine.

Hi Marlabeth!
First of all, Congratulations on your surgery! You did it and you took control, be proud of yourself! Sounds like you are going thru the grieving process over the loss of your old relationship with food. Completely normal and to be expected - I mean, if we were all completely "normal" with food we wouldn't need the surgery, right? =)
In the beginning like where you are now, LOTS is going on! You've just been thru major surgery, you're on a liquid diet, you are shedding fat fast which releases estrogen into your bloodstream and can make you emotional, your body is trying to heal on very little nutrition - you are embarking on a huge new "unknown", you are feeling all of this and the one thing I can tell you is - IT GETS BETTER! It really does, everybody out a few months and even shorter will assure you of that. You knew going in there would be tough times, right? This is one of them, but it will pass, you will adapt, each day will be better than the last, just hang in there! I felt the same way right after surgery and found it was the endless blahness and nothingness of the foods you are limited to right now - I was hungry all the time too and had constant cravings, etc., BUT once I was graduated to soft foods and then regular food, all of that went away. It's almost a baptism of fire, we all have to go though it but we all do come out the other end. It won't last forever - just keep telling yourself "This is temporary. This is temporary".
Remind yourself why you did it, even make a list of all the things you'll be able to do as a slim person, rely on these things when you get down. But realize we all have those times and you are not alone. You did a really smart thing logging on here and asking for help. There's a lot of wisdom and compassion on this board and you will find it. Good luck and we are all rooting for you!!!

Yes severe reflux can happen post GBS, and one of the MAIN reasons mine was reversed over a month ago. I would get with your doctor and get on some nexium or some other acid reduction medication.. good luck and keep us posted! Janie

Hopefully your doc did put you on some sort of prilosec or something for part of that issue.. and I strongly agree with Zen on the gas-x strips. I ate one with every meal and it helped SO MUCH...

As far as the hunger goes, research head hunger. From what I was told, it is physically impossible for you to feel REAL hunger at this stage. The Non-Hunger lasts 6-12 months, so what you are feeling is head hunger. You do get used to that too... Not saying its easy mind you.. but right now.. sip sip sip.. Did I mention sip? Get your protein supplements in.. and enjoy the rapid loss stage!

You have a lap band, right? It is TOTALLY possible to be hungry at this stage. By day 5 I was eating soups and thinned out mashed potatoes. Try to find a good organic soup with low calories/fat and try 1 oz at a time, see if that helps the hunger. I'm sorry you're experiencing pain.

I had the lap band and revision to RNY and I had Severe Acid Reflux for the duration of my banding that is why I wanted it out and I got the RNY because I was a afraid to gain more weight. With the band it only maintained my weight. They put meeh on Prilosec and it helped tremendously.
