Default Surgery two days ago, have a couple Q's...

Hello all,
I had my Roux-n-y on the 15th (2 days ago). Does anyone else have that pain in your mid-calf (between your ankle and knee on the back of your leg) when you stand up after laying down for a while? I get that in both legs and it goes away after walking around for a minute or two.
Also, has anyone had the Atkins Advantage shakes as a source of protein and calcium? I need to find some tasty and affordable ways of getting protein.
Thanks,
Tony

Hello Tony. Welcome to the losing side. In regards to the leg pain I would strongly suggest that you call your doctor. You always run a risk of blood clots after surgery and any leg pain is cause for concern. It may just be that you are lacking something that are causing leg cramps. Have you been getting in enough water? If not try to increase your water intake. Dehydration can do nasty things to your body.

Take care of yourself and really think about calling the doctor.

I had weird calf pain for a few days and it was all about water. I know its hard to get in all your water the first few days but try as much as possible. Definitly call your doc too... hopefully its nothing since its in both legs but better safe than sorry!

I agree about the legs. Probably water, but should be concious of the possibility of clots.

As far as shakes, I got the Adtkins ones in a can and hated them because they taste like metal. I don't know if they sell the mix powdered. But my doctor recommended Carnation Instant Breakfast, which is definitely tolerable and has as much calcium and protein as most drinks. Hope that helps.

SugarFree Carnation Instant Breakfast with 8 ounces of Lactaid (can't do milk) is 14 grams of protein. I also add a half a banana and 1 1/2 scoops of Any Whey (unflavored protein powder...really great!) and the whole shake is a whopping 39.5 grams of protein....yummy!!

Default Leg pain

I would call the doc about leg pain-could be a clot and that can be very dangerous. As far as protein-try some of the protein powders to mix with liquid of your choice. Trader Joe's, Costco, and GNC will allow you to return anything you don't like, if you keep the receipt. I like Unjury which I order online-their Unflavored is really unflavored and mixes into anything that isn't over 130 degrees. I take crystal lite or reduced cal juices, pro powder and strawberries or banana chunks that I have frozen and blend them into a smoothie. Yummy! At the beginning I added a double dose of the pro powder to my AM smoothie so I was getting 40-50 gr of protein in my AM shake.

I bought vanilla icecream flavored Whey protein powder and I tried the carnation. Quick question - how soon did you start drinking carnation sugar free instant breakfast after your surgery?

Hi Tony,

I'm glad that Whitney remembered to tell you sugar-free and that you got it. I thought about it after when reading something else, but I actually didn't remember that there was more than one kind since I don't do the shopping. I actually had my first carnation in the hospital, so I guess it must have been on the morning of day 3. It was SO good since I hadn't had anything except water up until then. Good luck with this phase....it was tough for me....I felt really empty on the liquid protein phase, but as everyone says it's only a brief time and you'll get through it. Congratulations on the surgery and good luck! This forum answered more questions for me than anything!

I also had my first carnation breakfast in the hospital. It was 1 day after surgery. It shouldn't be a problem as long as it is the sugar free kind. Like Whitney I drink it almost every morning.
