Hi Dyann,

Coffee, whether it be caf or decaf, has zero calories when drunk black. The calories come from adding cream and sugar.

According to the starbucks website and nutritional info. A Venti decaf iced coffee without any additions (black) has 20 calories and 3 g of carbs.

Dyann, This quote is from the Mayo Clinic website at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cancer/HQ01134

"Water, black coffee and tea have no calories."

I'll trust the Mayo Clinic for nutritional information over Starbucks any day.
Speaking of Starbucks, the following might interest you:

Starbucks Targeted for High-Fat Products

By Abha Bhattarai

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Starbucks Corp. may be next on the target list of a consumer-health group that this week sued the operator of the KFC fried chicken restaurant chain for frying foods in oils high in harmful trans fat.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest said it is planning to campaign against the global cafe chain because of the increased risk of obesity, heart disease and cancer associated with high-calorie, high-fat products it sells.

And the possibility of legal action against Starbucks, similar to the case it is taking against KFC owner Yum Brands Inc., has not been ruled out, said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson.

Default When life gives you lemons... :)

Not going to step into the coffee/calorie question... but in regard to caffeine, my dietician and doc restricted us from drinking coffee the first month post op, as whether decaf or caff, coffee supposedly increases acid production in the stomach, so it was for healing purposes, not a diuretic issue.

As for its diuretic properties, my personal opinion is that it's a sensitivity thing, like everything else. Everyone has a different sensitivity to caffeine, and you need to be aware of yours.

I keep an eye on the color of my urine, at my dietician's suggestion. Sounds icky, but it works for me. She said any time the color got to a deeper yellow than the inside (not the outside) of a lemon, to up my fluid intake. The darker the shade, and the less frequently you urinate, the more dehydrated you are. So I just try to keep that in mind.

I drink about a cup to a cup and a half of coffee each morning and 3/4 of a gallon to a gallon of iced tea with Splenda every day--still can't drink plain water much, it makes Matilda the pouch feel very bruised.

I have the occaisional Starbucks: short (tall if I have been good with my water or and using the drink as a "snack") decaf, soy, non-fat, sugarfree hazelnut latte. Yummy treat every now and again. I have heard (you caffeine drinkers can correct me if I am wrong since I personally haven't had caffeine since surgery) that the caffeine effects you like alcohol - it takes so much less for the effects to "hit". I have so much energy that I don't need the caffeine to get me going...I just love the taste, and the feeling of being "normal" as I sip my coffee with a friend

I think it's a sensitivity thing--personally, caffeine has little or no effect on me. In fact, since the surgery, it seems to have less effect than it used to... a cup of coffee after noon would keep me awake all night long pre-surgery. Now it doesn't seem to affect my sleeping at all. And decaf tastes ookie to me.
