Default 9 days post op!

I'm 9 days post op. Do you think I could have a couple bites of refried beans or potatoes?

Depends on what your surgeon has suggested. I know there are some surgeons who allow their patients to try baked potatoe the day after surgery. Does your surgeon have a nutrionist you can get the thumbs-up from? When you try the baked potatoe or the refried beans that is actually about how much you will get is a few bites, maybe 2 or 3.

I agree with Denise, what instructions have you been given? If you don't have any, then its hard to answer your question based on the fact we don't know what you have had to date. It usually goes clear liquids, liquids, puree, soft foods then full foods - but the timing of each of these varies from doctor to doctor.

My surgeon said FULL LIQUIDS for the second week. I am 10 days post op, and ya know what...I had refried beans with melted cheddar today. I pureed them thin...and wha'la....soupish stuff. Damn good though!! Bad Laura..but I really wanted something a bit thicker than the regular cream soup. They went down pretty well, but I only dished myself an 2ounces and that is all I had...nothing else. It also took me a good 20 minutes to eat it. LOL!! Word of caution...I took SMALL/TINY BITES..and CHEWED..&...CHEWED...even if it is pureed smooth, then waited a good minute or two to be SURE it is setting well. If I had felt any twinge I would have...STOPED. I don't normally go against Dr. orders...but this time, I felt I was ready. It's kinda like soup anyway...at least that is how I justified it. I did journal it though, so if I am going to catch heck for it...I will find out next week when I have my two week followup.

Well I didn't do it. I had some tomato soup instead. My doc does say full liquids until 2 weeks so I have decided to wait. I can't wait though.

That's very smart of you, and I know it feels like FOREVER until you can move on to the next phase - but it will be so worth it to wait!!! You are going to appreciate foods in a new way...every bite will be savored.

Default eating too much too soon

My doctor is VERY strict on her post op regimine but she has GREAT success with her patients. 2 weeks clear liquids, next 4 weeks pureed, next 4 weeks soft food (easily chewed) then onto normal foods. Its seems to work well, cause it has been allowing me to "withdrawal" from my food addiction (which we all have) and in only 4 weeks I have lost 35 lbs.

Overdoing it could harm your staple line or could block your stoma. I would take it slow and steady.

Take this time to re-evaluate your eating habits and enjoy life without relying on food all the time.

Continued luck. Melissa
