Default questions, questions.....

If I get this surgery, will I ever be able to eat fats or sugars again? Or is that stuff gone forever?

Can I eat splenda or sweeteners?

And

How much do supplements cost?

I would go into it with the mentality of no carbs and sugars ever again. When you have lost a significant amount of weight you can treat yourself, but you may or may not dump, and you need to be aware of your trigger foods that may make you lapse into your bad habits. For me it is bread, pasta, potato, so I stay away totally.

I can tollerate splenda without a problem. Some "Sugar Free" foods that are loaded with sugar alcohols still give many people a problem.

I don't do protein supplements so I can't help you there. Each doctor has their own preference. Mine wanted you to reestablish good eating patterns and only use supplements if you can not reach your protein intake goals.
Vitamins are maybe $20/month in total once you add them all up

Good Luck

I think for most people the answer is probably yes.... with moderation. But the real answer is that you have to change your mind set with the surgery. You can't just have the surgery and not be an active partner in making better choices. For some people, the surgery takes care of their choices because they dump from sugar/carbs. For others, not so much. Therefore, you will have to chose foods that will give you the nutrition you need and the right caloric intake.

good luck!

I can eat carbs in moderation and I do.. I eat pasta, crackers and tortillas. I don't do it daily and I don't eat much of it. Mainly I don't eat these because I don't like the way they feel in my pouch.

As to sugar.. I tolerate sugar better than I do sugar alcohols and I will on occasion eat something sweet. Last night we were at the mall and I ate half a peanut butter cookie. It didn't phase me at all. I HAVE dumped on sugar before and I know that there is a limit to how much I can eat without getting sick.

I know THAT is why we had the surgery ... to learn MODERATION, to learn to put the good stuff first and to learn to limit our intake. We didn't do it to never eat something again. I just don't think that is realistic. To think you will NEVER eat something again. If you get sick on something then obviously you will avoid it, but if it doesn't then I think it can fit into a healthy lifestyle.

If we COULD voluntarily give up something for life would we BE here? I wouldn't....

Maybe look at it this way - if you give up the fats and sugars forever, what else will you be giving up forever? Your excess weight.

I've found it more helpful to focus on the things that I can eat that are good for me that I enjoy. I went through a couple of dreadful weeks in month 5 where I felt deprived and tried to eat lots of things I shouldn't have. Most of them I threw up. Lesson learned - eat right and be happy.

Having said that, I can tolerate small amounts of sugar and fats. My body definitely tells me when I've gone over the limit (and yours will too). I've never had a problem with Splenda or Equal - I use both of them frequently in tea & on my cereal.

Good Question and I think you have a few good answers already. Balance and moderation. I limit my carbs now and will probably for the rest of my life. I do have a little tortilla or potato - maybe a few other things here or there. My focus is protein and good veggie carbs. Some fruit, but doesn't sit well unless I have something else in the pouch.

Fat I can tolerate, and I believe I get more than enough fats in my diet through red meats, eggs and avocado. I cook with olive oil and use very little butter.

Sugar - haven't tried true raw sugar and don't plan on it. I do have to watch sugar alcohols - one piece of something is fine, 2 and I feel ill.

Splenda I use every day and have no reactions to it. I talked with the dietician and she said that up to 2 cups of splenda a day is well within the limits...I maybe have 1/4-1/2 cup total a day, well under the limit.

I find that my tastes have changed and I don't care for or crave the bad things. I have to watch portion size and fats....these are my triggers.

I can eat fats and sugar both, but I limit them. I do all sweeteners just fine and actually admit to using them quite a bit. Sugar alcohol though is terrible for me. I am better off choosing a lower sugar version of something and using moderation (like dark choc, or choc with nuts, or plain cake, no icing). I do have some foods with fat, but have pretty close to eliminated any deep fried crap from the diet. I occasionally have chips or fries, but my chicken, fish, etc I now eat grilled, baked, and broiled. They still taste good and use seasonings or sauces and really don't miss the greasy breading much. Supplement costs vary widely. I would click around online for price ideas, or check out your local GNC. Good luck.
