Red face 2 weeks PRE-op question for you post-oppers!!

HI.. I am currently just working on my 2 weeks of OPtifast and it is going so so.. trying hard though!!

So I know EVERYONE loses at different speeds. .. has anyone been able to coorelate a loosing figure for that first month? Like roughly say 30 to 50? ect??? I have been trying to figure an average based on some of your losses and it likes like there is a considerable amount the first month.

I am not really expecting a certain amount because I dont want to feel I have to live up to that expectation right now and just let my body do its own thing and what I lose, I lose. Is this a smart way to go about it? I would like to have a goal of 40 lbs lost my first month, but again I have no idea if that is realistic or if it isn't. What do you all think? I am just happy to know that it will come off and if it is not fast.. NO PROBLEM!! If it does.. WHAT A PERK!! HAHA.. Talk soon!

To help with comparisons think of things in terms of %age of excess weight. The first month is usually 20% of your excess weight, first 6 months is 55-60% of your excess weight and then 1-2 years for 100%. Those who dieted prior to surgery and lost a bit prior may have a slower first month as they probably already lost that big shift in water weight etc. In general, the average person loses at least 75% of their excess weight. I think the people here are probably more dedicated than ones that don't continue with support group/boards, so I think we do better as a whole.

Hope that helps

I only lost 12 lbs my first month and was so disappointed - I was in tears at my first post-op Dr's visit. My Dr told me my weight loss was perfectly normal for me - based on body weight percentages. However, the next two months showed a steady decline and I am pretty close to where I want to be now. It's important to remember that everyone is different. Be careful about comparing your weight loss to the weight loss of others - you don't want to add any more stress to this journey than you have to.

Hi . I just had my surgery on May 17th that's 3 weeks and 2 days ago ... I have lost 16 lbs so far. I'm not sure if that is great or not and I know I am going by all of the rules to the menu. Someone else had the surgery 1 week prior to me and has lost almost 30 lbs...??? I wonder if there is a good way to configure results???? good luck though we certainly LOSE in any event!

It really depends on where you are when you start. Some of my friends that were 300+ lost 50-60lbs. I was 284 pre-op and only lost 24 my first month. It also depends on how your body heals and what you can and can't handle food wise. I can handle darn near everything and my body healed where I can eat a bit more than the average person. This made m weight loss slower but I like it cause it give my body time to adjust and I like that.

A friend of mine lost a ton of wieght very very fast I think it was about 80 lbs in 4 months and she wasn't very big to begin with. I wish I could give you a better answer but the best advice I can give is trust your body and do what it tells you. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Default My Outlook Is....

As long as I am going down and not up......I'm happy. For me it doesn't matter how fast I lose it. As long as I don't gain it back. I have heard that the slower you lose the better it is. I have lost about 90 pounds so far since my first appt May 2 with my doctor. I feel better now than I did 10 years ago. I don't mind taking my grandson for a walk or chasing him around the yard . If you check out my profile from OH you may get an idea ....I think I lost 20 the first month .

I scrolled down and you have gotten a lot of good responses. I agree that you have to look at percentages, especially when you have less to lose. I had roughly 100 to lose, so for me to drop 40-50 in a month would be ridiculous and unhealthy. I think the important thing is to follow the rules as best you can......including getting your protein and enough calories so as not to slow metabolism too badly. If you follow the guidelines and work towards good health it will shake off. I lost 24 and 20 my first 2 months, and have never had bigger than 9 lbs a month since. However, I feel good, I am healthy, and it has totalled 86 lbs now! I only used comparison to try and evaluate if I was following the rules closely enough (most of us do splurge in moderation, but don't have a lot of experience successfully managing that concept). And I agree that any loss is good!!! Also remember that time of the month, hydration, salt intake, exercise, time of day, etc will all affect the scale. Don't forget to use clothes and body measurements to determine progress. There were times I barely lost and was dropping sizes, probably due to exercise and muscle gain.
