Protien Deficiency
How does a protien deficiency prevent weight loss? Right now I'm losing weight pretty well, but I gather that if I don't up my protien intake I won't be continuing with that. Why? I stopped drinking my protien drink during the first week after surgery because it gave me gas/bloating. But I'm worried now about what happens if I don't pick up the protien intake. Can someone clarify what happens with protien deficiency? Is there a bar or something other than the powder mixes that I could take? I guess I'll try the mix again but I'm not hopeful.

Hey Ron......I was just in The Vitamin Shoppe yesterday and they have some drinks that are lactose free. Also some of the proteins are made without milk, like the Nectars. Did you try them to figure out why they have that effect? If the problem is not milk, then try dry milk mixed into hot tea, coffee, cocoa, and even into a glass of milk, some cream soup, or yogurt. Just make sure the liquid is not too hot so the dry milk doesn't get curdled. Good luck and let us know. As for bars, I have found the most tolerable tasting to be the ones with like 15 or fewer grams of protein. It seems the more it has the nastier it tastes. I have found Power Crunch and South Beach to be the best as far as taste.

No, honestly I bought a $50 jug of the whey protien powder and have been of the mind set that buying another protien supplement would be wasting what I already bought. But I guess if I'm not gonna use it anyway it's the same thing. Just chalk it up to experience and go from there. Maybe I could get something else and just drink a smaller ammount of the whey one. I've got some time after I go in for my 1 month labs today. Maybe I'll stop by the GNC or something and find something a little more agreeable to me.

Ron there are so many thing you could try besides those protein powder mixes. The gas you were experiencing your first week out was totally normal. That is why it is a good idea to take a Gas-X or a Tums 15-30 minutes after you consume your protein drink. The reason why you are dropping weight still is because men usually have a large amount of muscle mass and protein helps build muscle mass which in turn helps you lose weight. Ron there are to many forms of protein out there you could try instead of excluding protein out of your diet.
Here are just a few websites you can check out. I am sure a couple of other people could recommend some other resources for some better tasting protein. Hang in there Ron.

Thanks Denise. I went ahead and ordered one of those protien sampler packs to see if I could find something tasty that didn't give me some sort of discomfort. Hopefully that'll get me back on protien track.

I just chalked it up as par for the course. I sent some supplements off to other people who can love them the way I couldn't. My daughter and foster adult also drink them some in lieu of breakfast and such. Maybe you can go to a support group and trade someone for a different one. I suggest you buy one serving when you can and try them. Denise uses a protein that comes in a tube and is like 3 oz..........I just saw them at Vitamin Shoppe now. So now you might be able to try them without ordering a lot online. They had a cooler there with all kinds of containers and cans of individual supplements. Good luck......you'll find something......and dry milk is cheap and you can buy it even at discount grocers.

When you become protein deficient, your body breaks down more of your own muscle and goes into conservation mode (sort of like hibernation) where it tries to hold onto everything because it thinks it is starving.
Those power crunch bars are kick butt. They are different from all others. You know those sugar wafer cookies that are crunch wafers with cream between them. That is what these are. I love them. My 2 year old loves them. They do have a big more fat than others so I wouldn't eat them all day, but to get an extra 15 grams in...hell yeah!!!

Ron I think that was a good idea. Protein is a very important part of our new lifestyle but once you get further out and able to eat regular food it will seem much easier as time goes by. Have you tried Isopure? They sell it at your local GNC and Vitamine Shoppe. Keep me posted on how you like the sampler.

Took me a long time and lots of trial and error to find one that I like. The only one so far is the Nectar Product. I have fruit medley and it turquoise blue, but tastes pretty good. 23g in 8oz of water. I make up most of my protein with food now - about 45-60g and then add the protein shakes to make up to 80g. It takes a while to find one you like......keep trying.
