Iron supplements -the good, the bad and the ugly?
I am considering adding iron supplements to my daily regimen since I am feeling tired ALL of the time. Can you give me feedback about what kind to take and what the drawbacks are to taking it? Thanks

Ferrous glycinate. I take 28 mg a day. I get it from walmart and it is a little over $3 for a couple month supply. The bottle is labeled "Gentle iron". Not only is it gentle, it is the type we need as GBP patients as we do not absorb ferrous sulphate as well. My MD required iron supplements for any menstruating woman having this surgery. Iron is so difficult to replace once low. Easier to maintain it. The other type is ferrous fumurate which is also good, but I didn't find any.

Thanks so much! I am going to go get some sublingual B-12 tomorrow and some iron. I hope that will give me some energy.

My surgeon recommended "Vitron C". It is iron with Vitamin C. Iron is best absorbed in an acidic environment. We don't have the acid any longer so the C helps it absorb much easier. I took it today. No problem and no stomach upset.

Thanx for the heads up Dyann, I had no idea the Iron I was taking (BTW suggested by my surgeons office) was not right for us after surgery, I went out and bought the "Gentle Iron" from Wal*Mart. Thanx again!

Since I have been severely enimic since surgery I have gone crazy with every kind of iron out there. Including imported from Germany liquid iron $50. bucks a bottle which lasted a week....blah blah blah....Then on a whim, I purchased Gentle Iron from Walmart and it has helped tremendously!!
It is easy on my tummy. I showed the bottle to my Hematologist and she was impressed with it. Glycinate is absorbed in the lower GI and since we are bypassed in the upper GI this means we actually absorb it!! Plus it has vit C, Folic acid and B-12 included in the capsule.
Love it!

I don't think many surgeons are very well versed in nutritional supplements, even the ones that do bariatrics. I have been very impressed with my surgeons knowlege in this area and his line of vitamins. He doesn't push them on us. I take his mulit with thiamine and his B12. I then get an essential fatty acid supplement from GNC, Calcium liquid from the internet and Iron from Walmart. Those are my favorites and reasonably priced. His website is wlsvitamins.com.

Proper Iron to take
My surgery was in Federal Way, WA with Dr OH. I was 360 and now 185....in post op info....i had surgery in 2002 (feb)...they said to take vitron c...no ferrous sulfate....but can any other iron me as good since vitron c has 200mg of ferrous fumerate???...only reason i request other...is because this is very expensive...it costs $15.00 per bottle which lasts only one month....60 coated tablets...and not too many drug stores carry it...here in palm desert, ca...only CVS supplies it.

I only take one Vitron C a day with no problems. I was told that is the best to take as well since it has the C in it. It helps with the absorption.
