I went to the pictures (movies) on Saturday & Hubby ate a bag of popcorn & I had a diet coke. I sat there with my 500mls of still water! I used to love popcorn & would eat a large container, I also miss my diet coke sooo much. To be honest the popcorn did not bother me in the slightest, I'm just not hungry very often any more & usually have to remember to eat (for my health) now. The thought of getting a piece of popcorn caught in my stoma also worries me tremendously, so I probably won't try it for at least a year.
I have not dumped & seem to have a "strong" pouch but I still avoid cakes, sweets, chocolate, biscuits & puddings. I don't want to know if I can tolerate even a small amount of theses things. I used to binge on them & want to avoid them at all costs post-op'.
I also don't understand people who've had WLS trying them again but each to their own, maybe I'm lucky not to have cravings or continual unsatiated hunger any more - I'm so thankful & hope it lasts.

Definetly don't try these things, it's NOT fun at all. I have an extremely strong pouch and still can't stand those things. Biscuits I can handle, but don't eat them anymore as they are too fluffy and all bread. Sugar free pudding is fine

Well for me (like Bridget said) there is a big difference between gloating about it vs. oops, I ate something I shouldn't have. This is not an easy thing, loosing weight regardless of how you do it, is tough.
I come here for support, I feel I can type how I feel and I am just thankful that we are not all the same; that others can provide infomation so that people like me who don't have a support group, or a doctor who "has a food plan" can come and learn how to use the tool I have been so graciously given.
I speak of moderation too, but I know for me, there are some things that are just off limits (sugar items, breads, pasteries, chip...you get it). I don't want them, don't want to see if my pouch likes them or not. Where my tool hopefully helps me is in the moderation. I wasn't a super bad eater before, but major bulk...apparently my stomach was the size of a football when they did the surgery. I don't ever want to be back there again. I don't keep the junk food in the house, if I did, I might be tempted to eat them. There is pasta, bread, rice ect for my family, but I don't want them. I never want to go back to where I was....I still need to be reminded of that..........and you all do a good job helping me get my head around this.

All of us had the surgery for many different reasons, but you can probably bet that most of us got where we were because we had a problem with food. We had stomach surgery, not brain surgery!!!!
If you have the discipline to never eat anything wrong, never go off your diet, always exercise as you should, then you are blessed!
I think most of us struggle everyday to eat what we should, drink what we should, exercise as we should. And we will struggle everyday for the rest of our healthy lives. This is a tool, not a fix!!
I've had a day here and there, a week here and there where I'm out of control, but then reality sets in and I realize what I'm doing. Unless you have the false mentallity that you can eat whatever you want as often as you want and never exercize, you will be successful at this surgery. Life is about learning from your mistakes!!!

One more thought. I hear people (not here) talk about the fact that they can eat whatever they want in the first 6 months after surgery and still loose weight. That is fullproof. This amazes me. Anyone know why this is possible?
I follow a strict guideline for quantity and types of food that I eat and find it a struggle to loose my weight. I have to wonder if I would actually gain weight if I ate the wrong things in the first 6 months. I think I would.

That would be due to the malabsorptive part of our surgery. Making the tummy smaller is only a part of it. What ever food you eat isn't in your intestines long enough for the calories, fat, etc. to be digested the same as they were before. However, it doesn't take long before your body and brain learn to work together again and then this process is harder. Here is a quote from the site from where I had my surgery. Hope this helps!
"The procedure reroutes a variable length of the small intestine to connect to a newly created stomach pouch, bypassing a portion of the digestive system. The procedure promotes weight loss not only by limiting food intake, but also by decreasing the absorption ability of the digestive system."

My first support group meeting
You guys need to come to NY and talk some sense into the people at my support meeting. (went to my first one last Thursday) It was like some of them couldn't wait to eat the wrong thing, they threw up every day etc. I was a bit shocked. There were 2 or 3 people who had it down, and no surprise, they were looking great.
I feel like I have worked SO hard to even get to have this surgery (I'm still pre-op remember) that I can not imagine any piece of any kind of food being worth the chance I might develop bad habits. I have had to work SO HARD to lose this 10% - I think I will live in fear of sugar and fat! And I will remember your words - all of you!
What I have learned from this thread is that it is best to obey the rules; you'll get the best results. But if you go astray, you can always come back to the right way and you guys are here to help.
Thanks!

Honestly, I don't know why people go through all of the flaming hoop jumping (for insurance), all of the pre-surgery testing, all of the support group attendance, the pain and discomfort of the surgery, the learning to eat again process, all of the EXPENSE......to just sabotage themselves. These people have problems WAY MORE SERIOUS than their weight.

But I will come to the defense of some and say that they really aren't aware of their issues and get kind of blind sided with the surgery. I don't take issue with them in general........even those who aren't successful. Aren't we then just treating them with the same disdain that folks who could do it without surgery did? How are we different then when we don't know why we are able to do it now (assuming I continue) and they are not.....there but for the grace of God go I. We don't know for sure with each person what mental, emotional, physical, or even biological reason that they are not able to lose the weight successfully even with surgery. What I DO take issue with is the attitude of bragging and intentionally misusing it.
