Hi Sophie,
I don't post much here as I'm English & I know bariatrics is different in our country, (early days). But I love to lurk & read all the info/advice. I am nine weeks out & have been very lucky in my recovery & weight-loss & only had doubts my first post-op' week, (which seems to be normal) then it has been plain sailing & smiles all the way - so far.
I have only told my husband & I have quite a close family too. I have never regretted it. After dropping hints about weight-loss surgery in the general conversation with family & friends pre-op' to gage their reactions, I decided I did not want the battle of trying to re-educate closed minds!Admitedly I have a wonderfully supportive husband who ran around after me physically initially & has been there for me 100% psychologically. I also have a very good supportive Surgeon.
Only you know your family, friends & work collegues well enough to know who you can trust but remember once you are "out" you can never go back again. On the UK forums I often read about members who have told only one close relative (or friend) & they have blabbed to everyone, with detrimental effects. Bariatric surgery is looked upon negatively in this country unfortunately though & from what I've researched it is thought of more positively in the States, especially by the Insurance Companies. I hope things in time get more positive here too!
Good luck with your journey, I'm sure you will make friends on here & have people of a like mind to talk about things with. My poor husband had to listen to me blithering on about RNY for months before I took the plunge but you do need to talk, research, talk & research again to be sure it is the right thing for you.
