Waking up and passing out
Hey, guys! I haven't been here in a while, I started a new job that takes all my time and energy. But I have a quick question because I can't get in to see my Bariatrician until June 6.
Has anyone else had this experience? I wake up every once in a while, feeling completely normal. Then, while I'm in the shower or getting ready, I suddenly feel extremely dizzy and nauseous, and on several occasions have passed out. It pretty much knocks me out for the rest of the day, and I don't feel normal again until I wake up the next morning.
I'm following every rule and doing everything I'm supposed to.
So what gives?

I don't know, but if your bariatric doc has no time for you I would get into my pcp immediately and find out!! I hope this improves soon. I can think of some things that would cause it, but if you are following the rules and eating healthy then it "shouldn't" be any of them. Keep us updated.

It may be as simple as an iron deficiency.....but Marty is right - you need to go to the doctor and get a blood workup!

Hey bama. Nice to see you around. Well it could be a couple of things going on, maybe dehydration or something else. Get it checked out as soon as possible. Honestly June 6th is to long to put something like this on hold. Talk to your PCP and see what he/she thinks.

Sounds to me like Orthostatic Hypotension. I would suspect you are taking blood pressure medicine and it needs to be adjusted. If it isn't that perhaps you are dehydrated.
What is Orthostatic Hypotension?
Orthostatic hypotension is a sudden fall in blood pressure that occurs when a person assumes a standing position. It may be caused by hypovolemia (a decreased amount of blood in the body), resulting from the excessive use of diuretics, vasodilators, or other types of drugs, dehydration, or prolonged bed rest. The disorder may be associated with Addison's disease, atherosclerosis (build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries), diabetes, and certain neurological disorders including Shy-Drager syndrome and other dysautonomias. Symptoms, which generally occur after sudden standing, include dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, and syncope (temporary loss of consciousness).

This happens to my hubby=and he never had WLS. What he does have is something called "Meniere's disease"-and the symptoms are strikingly similar-except it can happen any time of the day or night-no fun. It's an inner ear thing.

I think Steven might be on the right track. I have very, very LOW blood pressure...sometimes 90 over 50. And often I feel dizzy when I first get up in the morning or after just a few hours, or when I stand up too fast. I've even been known to pass out if I start laughing hysterically, or when I get really angry (me? get angry?...ha!).
Stop in at Walmart or one of those pharmacy stores that has a cuff machine. I don't think they are the MOST accurate, but it might indicate if yours is low.
This low blood pressure thing is a real pain, when considering surgery, btw. They wouldn't give me any pain meds the last time I was in recovery until my pressure went up..:O...which of course made it go up in a hurry!

I get that becasue of an inner ear problem. It normally happens after I take a shower and get some water in my ear or when I blow my nose. I have a small hole somewhere in my eardrum that causes me to have vertigo and get nausea. I am supposed to get it fixed, but always put it off.

I had this experience too but it was when I was first out of surgery until about the 2nd or 3rd week. I also experienced the same thing with other surgeries that I have had. It could be a number of things such as low blood sugar, low blood pressure or dehydration. In my case, the doctor said it was due to the hot water. It was dialating my blood vessels and causing me to feel light headed and dizzy. I took cooler showers and it really helped. I would talk to your doctor. The shower is not a good place to pass out.
