Unhappy Confused

Hello All
This is my first posting and I'm glad that I finally made the decision to join. (436)
I am 8 weeks post op and I have only lost 30 pounds, I am feeling very discouraged and confused. Im not sure what I'm doing wrong, i eat 3x a day and I usually get in 50-60 grams of protien a day. I have joined Curves gym and I attend 2x a week. My legs and ankle are very swollen my doctor wants me to have a sonogram to see if there are blood clots. My Nutrionist wants me to eat more, she believes my body is sending the signal that it's staving and my body is in the stavation mode conserving and retaining fliuds. I do not want to eat more I want to lose more - I hoped that by know I would have lost at least 50 pounds in 2 months.
I also need help with drinking water I only manage to drink 40-50oz a day. Please help!

Don't be discouraged. Everyone loses weight differently. I myself would not listen to anyone but Dr C and staff regarding eating more etc.

I did have water retention after the surgery and Kelly told me to drink coffee. Since I love coffee that was not a problem.

Listen to your surgery and follow his directions. After all he is the expert here.

I had some leg swelling also, and was told to walk, walk, walk...and when I was resting to prop them up. Also, with the water, I squeeze a few slices of lemon and add a pack of sweet 'n low. I also drank with a straw, it seemed to go down easier. Remember, Crystal Light, and other unsweetened drinks also count towards your liquid intake. Your body could be in a starvation mode. I found when I got in a little more food, I actually lost more.

for being 8 weeks out eating 50 to 60 grams a protein is a lot. are you sure you're not overeating. i'm a year and a half out and there is no way i eat 50 to 60 grams a protein a day. when i was 8 weeks out i was lucky if i was getting in 24 ounces a fluid a day. what i was told is don't worry about amount, but if you're thirsty drink, if not don't worry about it. is your nutritionist familiar with gastric bypass patients and that they don't require much food at the beginning. the amount of weight people loose depends on how much they have to loose. someone larger is going to loose more than someone not as large. i lost a total of 120 pounds and when i was 8 weeks out i was down about 40 pounds. don't worry about amount at this point, just eat your 3 meals and when your full stop eating.

Don't worry about your weight loss. It is a good idea to get a doppler done to check for blood clots if your Dr. Feels it necessary. However, I had severe water retention post-op and Dr. Callery prescribed lasix for me which helped a lot. I think I was down about 30 lbs 8 weeks out and now six months out I am down 100 lbs or so. I am not sure I haven't weighed myself lately. Don't worry the weight WILL come off. This is not a race to see who loses faster it's a race to get healthy. Don't speed things up too much. Just concentrate on getting some protein and water in. Everything else will work itself out.

Default Ding,

First off, Welcome to the forum! We're glad you're here. Is (436) your weight?

I'm 9 weeks out tomorrow. At my 6 week check up, I told Kelly, nurse for Dr. C, that I'm so far behind people that have had their surgery around the same time as me. This is what she told me and was later confirmed with Dr. Potts in group support; larger men will lose the fastest, larger women will lose the most next and the smaller woman, with less to lose will loose less (fast). (Does that make sense?) I'm 35 pounds down. Others that have had their surgery close to Aug. 9th are so much further down than I. I can't get in 60 grams of protein a day. Water does not help you lose weight, it does flush out the toxins in our body, so it's very important to drink water, about 64 oz a day. What exactly are you eating?

Which surgery did you have? Laporoscopy/open RNY gastric bypass, lap band, or some other form? If you have swollen legs and ankles - yes, go see your doctor about that. Don't wait. Blood clots are deadly. If it's just water, your doctor may want to put you on a dieretic sp? pills that help you release water from your body. This course takes follow up, so it's nothing you should try to do on your own.

Having a converstation with your doctor about these issues is highly recommended. I hope you get it all cleared up!

Cool Don't fret...it's okay!

Welcome to the forum!
It's funny that you should be discussing this since I just had this conversation with a bunch of wonderful ladies yesterday at lunch.

I am 10 weeks out on Tuesday and have lost a total of 43 pounds. You know...I was a bit discouraged myself and got my thoughts straightened out by my husband, Kelly and my new friends at thinnertimes.

You can't just look at the scale. You also have to look at how well your clothes are fitting, how your jewelry is fitting and how many inches you are losing. Have you measured yourself recently? That is so important as well.

I am only 5'3" and started out at 239 pounds. Kelly explained it this way... and you know she gets right to the point. She said that because I'm over 20, I am not of the male pursuation and didn't weigh too much when I started out, my weight is going to come off slower than normal. She asked me to give her one year to get me to my goal. I believe I can do that, afterall, it did take me more than one year to get to 239 pounds. I have come to the conclusion that I need to learn to not be so hard on myself and be more patient with none other than ME.

Please don't give up on yourself because you are successful! You have already lost a total of 30 pounds! That is so awesome!

Let us know how your appointment goes. We're anxious to hear your progress.
