What to Take for a Cold...
Hi everyone! Have I caught a whopper of a bug! I'm not even sure what to call it because it's not the flu, but definately worse than a cold. I was wondering what y'all take when you have colds. I have a list of stuff from the clinic that did my surgery that I can take, but it seems to me the stuff they suggested wasn't really anything that has worked for me in the past. Also, do you feel we are more susceptible to colds now that we can't eat as well? This cold with an attitude is kickin' my butt! I hope you are all well and for those of you in the Midwest like me, finally enjoying some above freezing temperatures!!!

Zicam nose spray does the trick. It doesn't hurt when you spray it...its like a gel. Works good.

To relieve the symptoms, I take Alka Seltzer cold medicine. Plop, plop, fizz, fizz!! They have all kinds to relieve various symptoms. The night time stuff is great when it's time to sleep! And they have a day time versions too.
Feel better soon!

The important thing is to read the ingredients. Make sure it doesn't have any aspirin, ibuprofen or alcohol in it. I'm not positive but I think the Alka-Seltzer may have aspirin in it.

Also with the Alka Seltzer, should we be oncerned with the carbonation? I liked Airborne before surgery, but am afraid of the bubbles now...

Whiney, yes, I think early post-op the bubbles could very easily be a problem. After 3 months it may be okay but I would be careful.

I take robitussin syrups....read labels. The decongestant/cough suppressants are made with sorbitol (sugar alcohol) and no sugar. I didn't dump and all was good. The only down side is they aren't long acting so every 4-6 hours I was taking more. Nasal spray was my best friend, but be careful not to get addicted to it!!!

Mary
I use Airborne. Dr. Callery's office said it was OK for me to use about 2 weeks after surgery. Hope you get well soon.

worked great, tasted horrible
I used Tylenol severe cold/flu daytime formula, liquid form. It was pretty effective, but the taste was horrible. If you can tolerate the flavor, it's worth a try because it was quite effective and since its a liquid easier to "swallow".

I thought I'd never be able to take it again - I'm glad you posted about it, because if I just have to wait a few months - its better than finding out I can eat cake or something! I live on that stuff in the winter! And since my surgery is in June, by November, I should be able to take it again.
I'm singing! Woohoo!
(we pre-ops have to get excited about little things)
