Unhappy Pre-OP Diet

Hello,

My surgery is on March 28th and my doctor put me on a 2 week liquid diet and for the first week I was able to handle it, then I noticed that I was getting very irritated and dizzy. So I finally broke down and ate a salad, and some soup. I have done this now a couple of times and I have still managed to lose 10lbs. I was wondering did anyone cheat on there liquid diet? Should I be worried?

You were probably feeling dizzy because the decrease of calories and possibly low blood sugar. I was on a special bariatric product for 2 weeks before surgery. There were some protein bars, chili and soy nuts but it was promarily liquid. I had the same problem with feeling dizzy. I won't lie to you, I did cheat a couple of times. I would just suggest that if you need to have something to eat that it be something healthy. I'm not sure what you doctor has to say, but mine was extremely strict about any weight gain before surgery. He was very clear that if I didn't lose during the 2 weeks before surgery he would be cancelling my surgery. I can tell you, that was motivation enough for me to curtail the cheating. Good luck on the liquid diet. I know it's hard but is so worth it in the end.

You can eat some sugar free jello. That counts as liquids.

My doctor only required us to fast for 4 days. But I also had to do a bowel prep. I was only allowed sf jello, protein shakes, sugar free clear liquids & broth for the 1st 2 days of the 4 day fast. On the third day I had to stop all protein shakes & do my bowl prep. 4th day still no protein shakes...just sugar free clear liquids, broth & SF jello. I lost 15 pounds.

Saying that...if you aren't required to do a bowel prep. Then I assume the length of your liquid diet is required because they want you to be completely empty. No solid bowels. Please try to follow the directions of your doctor as it states. If you feel yourself getting dizzy then call your doctor & maybe they can give you a particular food that will break down easy that won't effect your bowel.

Unhappy Diet

I've been on a (modified) liquid diet for almost a month now.
In the beggining, it was totally liquid. Dr. C told me to go out and get many different liquid diet shakes, so I did. After about 2 weeks, I was not doing well. I was only getting about 700 cals & I was working out 3 day a week.
I had no energy. I called and asked the Dr if I could add some chicken or fish.
He said as long as I was able to keep the cals under 1000, go for it!!
So I added a small salad with some chicken or fish at night. Every now and then I have a bowl of soup for lunch and no salad at night. It has been working great, until the week of my surgery. I ended up catching bronchitis!!
So now my date is Apr 7th and I had to add some more fish or chicken to my diet so I could get some more energy to fight the damn crud!
So on Monday, the Dr wants me to go totally liquid again. I guess I can do liquid for the next 4-5 weeks. (2 weeks before my surgery & 2 weeks after)
So it can be done!
Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery!!

Default I cheated!!

Being on an all liquid diet 3 weeks before surgery was wreaking havoc with my body and my medications. I was jumpy, irritable, shaky, and ready to kill!!

The arthritis medications were not being absorbed slowly but dumping quickly into the blood and it was doing a number on me. After getting no answers from the nurse I tried some cereal in the morning and it helped tremendously.

Like you the said to be carefull and not over do it!! Good luck these next few weeks in preparing for the surgery!!

I had to do the pre-op diet for two weeks and it was all or nothing. They had an instance in the practice where I had my surgery where they actually stopped the surgery because the man hadn't done his liquid diet. For my doctor's it is for the liver to shrink and get out of the way so there is less a chance of complications.

Good luck...it isn't easy.
