Question Is there any kind of timetable for how much you can eat? (RNY)

Is there any kind of timetable for how much you can or should eat, whether by ounces, volume, calories or carbohydrates, at 3 months, 4 months, 5 months and out... Obviously there will be some variability from person to person, but I've never seen any kind of guidelines at all except for the first two months.

It makes sense to me to eat until I am satisfied but not full. My wife says I'm totally blowing my rapid weight loss "window of opportunity" by not restricting how much I eat. During the first 8 weeks I was restricted by the Dr. to 4 tablespoons (or 2 ounces) but I rarely felt any satisfaction let alone fullness. Since then he and the nut said I could eat until satisfied.

I'm just over 3 months out from my Open RNY - today for lunch I had 4 ounces of albacore and about 2 cups of salad with 3 cherry tomatoes. Satisfied, not full. My wife thinks I ate way too much.

If anybody here has anything authoritative on this subject I'd love to have it.

Help!

Default Not sure...

My dietician says no more than 1 cup in volume at a sitting (ever), in order to keep the pouch unstretched. The only variance is crunchy stuff, like popcorn, which I can't eat anyway - makes me go to sleep.

However--every person is different. I also can't eat lettuce...it just hangs up in my throat or in my pouch, and I know a lot of folks on here eat salads regularly.

I am 6 weeks out and limit my food intake at one time to 1oz. If its salad or soup, then I eat a little more. I drank 3 oz. of soup once and it was just a little too much and about an oz. came back up. I think it is very different for each of us. What guidelines did you doctor or dietician give you?

I got guidance for the first 2 months but nothing concrete after that. Very frustrating!

I am just over three weeks out, saw my surgeon yesterday, next week i can start introducing regular food back into the old system...he specifically stated no more than 1-2 ounces 3-4 times per day...seems like a lot with having to drink so much water and protein...good luck.....sharon

I think your meal was just fine. Just think how small two bowls of salad become after they're chewed well. It all depends for me-some foods, I can eat quite a bit-but others, just a few bites and I'm full. I think it does depend on how much space the chewed food takes up. The thought that you can now eat two bowls of salad-may be quite frightening when you think that your tummy is only the size of an egg-but really, as long as you chew well and take your time-that salad will not take up much space-and think how much you'ld have eaten in your old life. They're isn't any guidelines, at least as far as I know, about calories after bypass. Of course, you can't eat lots of high calorie foods-but salad??? Keep the dressing low fat or no fat-and I think it's a good choice.
