Question No Sugar Added vs Sugar Free

I recently went shopping for foods for after surgery and I ran into something that I never noticed. Is there a difference between Sugar Free and No Sugar Added? Will I be able to tolerate both?

yes, there is a big difference and if I'm wrong, someone please correct me....however, in "no sugar added" foods, there is naturally occurring sugar (let's say in Breyer's no sugar added ice cream, where the sugar is coming from the dairy product)....and that naturally occurring sugar may irritate your pouch.....

sugar free foods have non-sugar additives in them to make them sweet like aspartame, splenda, nutra-sweet, etc....some people find that these additives can make them ill, some people have no problems...I myself only use Splenda because it's made from sugar, but doesn't affect the body the way sugar does...and I've read alot about aspartame to steer clear of it as well-I read a study once that suggested aspartame makes you feel hungrier....hope that helps

Yep... what she said. Whole fruit popsicles have no sugar added, but have plenty of naturally occuring sugar in the fruit. You will only be able to tell what you can, or can not tolerate through trial and error. I can eat an entire Whole Fruit strawberry popsicle, but dump on two bites of banana.

On a side note about Splenda....

Splenda...

Yes big difference. I even found things that didn't list sugar. I looked at the carbohydrate content and it was 37.....so I asked the dietician and she said, yup, carbohydrates convert to sugar.

You will see lots of juices listed with no sugar added...drink them and they will most likely make you dump!

I have had no problem with anything that just has naturally occuring sugar. It's the sugar alcohol I can't tolerate! YIKES!
