Help! I'm having a problem
I really need input from you all. I might not post alot, but I do read often. I don't participate too much because I am a bit shy. But, HELP! I am eight weeks, one day post-op as of today. I am having problems with the pouch rules. Eating protein first is a major problem, eggs (ugh) chicken (double ugh) carne asada (ugh). I am unable to follow the rules. Should I not worry at this point? I try not to eat "bad" foods. I almost dread eating, it's like "Oh no, I need to eat. What am I going to eat?" Ahhhhhhh

Hi Deanna, I'm 4 1/2 weeks out and I know there are several foods that just don't sit right with me. Personally eggs give me a gut ache. I don't dump at all but my stomach hurts after I eat them. I have also heard that chicken can be really rough on your stomach. You may want to think about going back to some of the more liquid proteins for awhile. Give that little pouch a bit of a rest. It is important to get your proteins in. I know my surgeon says it is the number 1 thing to do. I can usually get in almost 60 GM of protein with things like refried beans, LF yogurt, creamed soups, cottage cheese, sugar-free pudding. Try making some creamed soups with milk, that way you can get some more protein in. I also use a protein powder to up some of the protein counts or to add protein in foods where there isn't any, such as SF applesauce, winter squash, etc.... I was told by my nutritionalist that if any food makes me nauseated, bloated or gives me diarehea I should leave it alone for at least a week before I try it again.
Just something to think about. Take care of yourself and that little pouch. You really are still pretty early post-op.

I would stay away from the red meat if ya can, and it AWHILE for me to be able to tolerate chicken and eggs.. they are pretty dense foods. So stick with the soft and the crispy.. go to the nutrition section and check out recipes. What you are experiencing is really normal.. domt worry about it n stuff. Ya need to try to be a lil more creative with the foods is all.. the sioft stuff anyway.
I made the mistake of having beef 1 1/2 months out and was sick a a dog.. I left it alone til I was 3 months out. Its all trial and error sugar pea.... (( HUGS )) and good luck!

Back to basics, darlin' You didn;'t mention yogurt and cottage cheese. Perhaps a protein drink like Isopure. Its in bottled form at Lindburgs and is $3.00 per bottle, but you could nurse it throughout the day to get 40 grams of protein in...
Be careful with your meats, sweetie..you know you can't tolerate them even the slightest bit dry...

I'm almost 4 months out, and still can't eat chicken... everyone is different, of course.
The only kind of egg I can eat is scrambled, not too dry, with some cheese on the top. (I don't HAVE to have the cheese, but it's yummy).
I still do a lot of string cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, and protein shakes. (Sometimes some refried beans, too). I just can't seem to "stomach" too much heavier food yet... which is just fine with me ~ it keeps me on my toes, and not cheating a lot.

Deanna, if you can give me an idea of what you do like that, I may be able to give you some ideas of what you can eat. That is if it's not ice cream or something with no hope in it.

Thank you...
I realize that I did leave out that I have a low carb yogurt with 12g of protein for breakfast and I drink one protein shake 20g of protein per day at work. I am taking my vitamins faithfully. It's the food thing that just kills me. I always used to tell my husband in my next life I'm going to be a vegetarian, it has recently occurred to me my next life started January 5th...You know I KNOW I did the right thing and this difficult/adjustment time will past. I keep telling myself this. Over and over....

I remember those feelings well, and they do pass. I ended up using dry milk in coffee, tea, or hot chocolate a lot (and still do almost 6 months out). That way you can get the liquids and proteins together, which are your two main concerns. You can also add it to soups and foods without the protein supplement taste I came to dread. You WILL get through this! Oh, I used cheese and yogurt too. One thing I liked was tomato sauce.......you can do wonders with a little ground beef, parmesan, ricotta, and mozzerella in sauce. Try and find an item or two you can imagine eating and think of ways to boost it. Good luck and hang in there sweetie.

My dietitian is a vegetarian - I'm meeting with her on Monday. I'll ask her for some vegetarian ideas (they will help me alot too) and let you know what she says.
I don't like eggs much either - I have found that scrambled eggs are helped tremendously by added lots of garlic powder and mozzerella cheese. I have been eating refried beans (with salsa and cheeder cheese), peanut butter (sometimes plain, sometimes on crackers), string cheese, fortified Jell-O, hot chocolate with protein added...stuff like that.
The book Before and After: Living and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by Susan Maria Leach has a bunch of different recipes for protein shakes - you might like it. I checked it out of the library. Maybe your local library will have it on the shelf. Good luck and I'll get back to you on Monday.
