Talking I'm finally FULL!!!!!!!

Well today is day 10 and I saw the nutritionist and she gave me the big old green light to start pureed foods so I came home and made egg salad w/LF mayo for lunch and had 1/4 cup and OMG I feel like I ate a whole bloody Thanksgiving dinner! Well, I'm not THAT full and certainly not uncomfortable but very VERY satisfied! It took me 30 min to eat it too which is good. Every little bite I was so afraid it would hurt or something. Does it get easier??

Yes it gets easier, and I know that you feel so much better! I still get apprehensive when I try something new, I usually try to do that at home.

You are doing great!

Absolutely......and you are doing great! Your experience is very typical, and it sounds like you did everything right and it stayed down and all. Good job! I hope your arms are safe now.

Congrats on your first pureed meal. I glad you tolerated it well. It is good to pay close attention to your pouch when you first start getting food into your new pouch. In time you will know how many bites are just enough for you.

I did this too for a long time. Now that I've gotten sick a handful of times I know that I get a decent warning where I could avoid embarrassment.

ahhhh...Denise, I knew you would feel full once you got something a bit more solid into that little pouch of yours. I couldn't believe how little it took me to feel full when I started on the soft foods earlier this week. I know my mind and pouch are happier.

Keep up the good work and give yourself a BIG pat on the back for sticking with it until you got the ok from the nutritionalist!

Question

Thanks everyone - I do feel better, both mentally and physically. It was the hardest time of my life - seriously.

But now here's my question / concern. The nutritionist wants me to get 60-70g protein a day and she said MOST of it should come from food (she wants me to only have one shake a day which is 30g protein so the other 30-40 has to come from food for now). My egg salad was a whoping 7 grams. Then I waited an hour and a half before making myself some tea to drink. How on earth do I eat that much in a day?? (this is too funny because I've been dying to eat and now I'm worried that I can't eat enough to meet my requirements!).

Default Regarding protein

I've never been able to get my protein from drinks because of my aversion to sweets... here's my answer in another post regarding protein possibilities... I've updated it some, too, and most of what you see below can be pureed if necessary, like the cottage cheese/fruit, and you can puree the chicken breast as well (well, I did):

One protein resource for me is protein bars--the Advant-Edge Morning Start bars have zero or just one gram of sugar, and few or no sugar alcohols, which I have to avoid, as well. They also taste sickeningly sweet to me, but I can gag them down if I think about something else while I'm gnawing on them. The Chocolate Chip Crisp one works pretty well, and has 13 gr of protein. If you're not sweet-averse, you'll probably love them.

Breakfast: one scrambled egg with an ounce of cheese and an ounce of ham is about 18-20 grams of protein. A half-cup of fat-free cottage cheese with a little bit of no-sugar-added canned fruit is about 13 grams of protein (this is what I eat most often). Yogurt is also high in protein, and you can eat it any time of day. If you can handle cereal, Kashi Go Lean also has about 13 grams of protein per serving.

Lunch/dinner: If you can stand tuna or salmon, you can get the pouches or cans, and moisten it with low-fat or fat-free mayo. One pouch (about 3 oz.) is 18-20 gr of protein. Right now, my favorite lunch at work is the Stouffer's Roasted Chicken frozen dinner - it's about 20 gr of protein, almost all of that in the chicken, and because it's in gravy, the chicken's not over-dry.

My favorite dinner at home is string cheese - three or four light string cheese (they're one ounce and 9 grams of protein each) melted over a little cooking spray and teriyaki sauce or italian spices. Four ounces of the Frigo light string cheese gives me 36 grams of protein in a small amount of food--and any spice you love can be used to jazz up the taste.

Snacks: sunflower seeds (chew them VERY well) are about 8 grams of protein per quarter cup. Soy chips are also pretty edible - you can usually find them in the organic section of the grocery store, they're about 7 grams of protein per serving. Pumpkin seeds are also high in protein, but I haven't found a commercial version that I can handle - too much black pepper, usually. A lot of people here eat beef jerky, but I don't - it tastes bad to me.

Other suggestions: Soy nuts are only vaguely edible alone, but you can chop them up in a blender/food processor and use them for a crunchy shake-n-bake type thing for chicken, adding to the protein.

With all these things, I run about 65 to 80 grams of protein a day (my dietician requires a minimum of 56). I eat about four times a day now.

Lisa thanks for the tips. I think as the week progresses (I just had my very first meal) it will get easier and i'll find some good choices (I think I'll try chicken tomorrow). 1/4 cup of pureed chicken / fish isn't really that much which is what concerns me, but I'll supplement with a shake per day and see where I end up. She said I could have up to 1/2 cup serving if I could fit it in but I don't want to push it - especially right now.
