A surgeon's expectations
Hi, everyone!
I saw my doc for my 4 mth post-op yesterday and he told me he expected to see me at under or just over 200 lbs when he sees me in another 4 months. He said he was setting the bar kind of high but he thought I could do it with increased exercise. I've been lacking in that area; I was walking almost 2 miles a day until it got so cold here.
But, can I really expect to lose another 55 lbs in just 4 mths? Or is he just trying to play a psychological game with me?
He said that that I've currently gone beyond goal/expectations for my 4 mth period. Maybe he's afraid I"m going to slow down now and he wants to push me; I just don't know.

Brooke give it all you got. If you can lose 55 pounds in 4 months I say go for it but don't stress your self out about it. My doctor has never thrown numbers out he expected me to be at by a certain point. I am sure his intentions are good.

I think it's possible, but agree that you shouldn't obsess. Follow your rules, increase exercise and see how it goes. I wouldn't be surprised if you did it though. The only reason I am a little skeptical is that now your body is used to fewer calories and it already shook that initial weight loose. It's normal to slow down a bit to 1-2 lbs a week. I've been at that rate since month 3......but it still adds up. And remember, I lost a size after maybe 20 lbs when I was bigger, now I can sometimes drop a size in maybe 10 lbs.......it's a bigger portion of what's left. You are doing fantastic though......keep it up!

Thanks, Denise and Marty... I guess what worries me most about the visit is that my surgeon has a lousy "bedside manner"... I feel just like I'm a statistic to him... like we're all just a statistic... and when I tried to tell him about the prickly feeling below my belly button he acted like there was no way I could have a hernia there.... I'm just confused... in general, I'm finding that I despise doctors.

See if you can get a second opinion on the hernia - and perhaps even talk to your doc about his bedside manner - good luck!

My doc isn't that bad, but I feel like if he saw me on the street he wouldn't even know me. I felt like just a number, BUT I went with the best rep and stats for the surgery........and mine was the best around. So, even though I am not overall thrilled with all the aspects, I am safe and healthy and just know I have to find the rest now on my own. It sucks though. I'd go to my pcp for the prickly feeling. I basically rely on her now.

i had a situation sort of like that, my primary doc had retired, the one who sent me to dr calary, and he gave my file to this doc that was a total asshole. he didn't believe in gastric bypass surgery at all, and told me the problems with my health were my own fault (my knees had started giving me problems and some other stuff) anyway he said i caused it all by having the surgery done. i was pretty upset so i called his nurse and she said he had a bad "manner" with everyone, she had me call the HMO and request a doc who was versed in GBS and who recommended it and had patients who he had followed up. so i was sent to a wonderful doc and he worked with me and answered alot of "is this because of my surgery" questions. also, i bought a new exercise video called "pilates for weight loss for dummies" it is awesome and easy to do. it lasts for 35 minutes. you need to exercise to KEEP off your weight once you loose it all, get used to it and find something you like.

Good luck talking to a "surgeon" about his/her bedside manner. If ya dont like him or her get another Dr. Heres a joke for ya, Whats the difference between God and surgeon? God KNOWS he cant do surgery.
Getting a referral to a new doc is your best bet. As far as your surgeon teeling what his expecations for you were. I would look at it as motivation. Althiugh discouraging he/she knows how different everyone is. Just do your damndest to worlk out and lose the weight, for your benefit.
Suzy gave me pilates for dummeis.. i gotta check it out.. and fast
