Default Hernia & tummy tuck

Hi, everyone.

When they did my GBS they found a fairly large hernia near my belly button. Of course they removed it but now I'm feeling strange down there, sore and sometimes a little nagging pain. The surgeon warned me it might return. If the discomfort doesn't get any worse I can deal with it, and I don't believe a hernia is life threatening. I think I heard on here that some doctors will give you a tummy tuck at the same time they remove the hernia at no additional charge. In that case, I'll wait until I've reached goal and have the TT and hernia operation at the same time.

Any ideas on that?

Kinda off topic a lil, and sorry i have no help to offer, but how does one get a hernia? I have seen a lot of posts about them, but never really knew now you can get it?

Default Hernia

Hi Brooke,

I would check with your doctor in regards to the possibility of another Hernia. I unfortunately waited for quite awhile to have mine repaired and ended up with a much more involved surgery than was orginally expected. I thought I would have a two inch scar and ended up with a 7+ inch scar.

There can be some risks with hernia's, you might do an internet search, one the risks can be the intestine protruding through the break. I'm not an expert so unfortunately I don't know all of the technical terms and names. Either way if it's causing any pain or pulling or even looks funny I would have them take a look at it. I would hate for you to go through the kind of recovery I am going through. I am sure Dale can also shed some light on her experiences with Hernia's as well.

Best wishes and hopes for no Hernia's!

Kristen

Kristen, my 4-mth post-op is on Feb. 16 so I'll tell him about it then. Also, if the pain increases I'll see my family doctor about it before then. If I remember correctly, the hernia they removed involved my intestinal wall.

Danette, good question and I have to admit, I'm going to have to take Kristen's idea and do some Internet research.

Your abdomen is made up of layers with the deepest called the fascia. That is the strongest layer. When you have a weakness in the fascia either from birth or previous surgeries, or obesity, your intestines poke through the fascia and into your soft tissues. That is a hernia. It is classified as reducible (goes back into your abdomen without a problem and may come back out) or non reducible (stuck in the defect in the fascia). The problems arise when the hernia is non reducible because the intestine can get stuck and swell and the blood supply can get cut off and be strangulated and die. So hernias are not an emergency to fix unless they are non reducible. The smaller openings are harder to get the bowel through, but once there it gets stuck easier. Each patient is different. If you do have a hernia you want to avoid doing anything that increases your abdominal pressure (heavy lifting, constipation etc). They can easily fix it with a TT.

Hi Brooke,

I'm glad you will be able to see your Dr. and check with them. I wish I would have went right away.

There are so many things that can cause a Hernia. I unfortunately had multiple factors with mine, my weight, and then lifting heavy stuff for my powerlifting competitions. I know better now than ever to listen to my body.

good luck & good wishes,

Kristen

I noticed that when I turn over in bed at night that I feel a prickly sensation like pins pushing against my skin from the inside out.

Dyann-What would we do without you? I was just going to say that it's your guts poking out! Thanks for a good explaination! My poor Grandmother had one the size of a grapefruit around her belly button area. She waited years to get it fixed and once she had it done she wished she had done it years earlier.

AWWWW shucks!!! I really enjoy helping out around here answering the medical questions. I know the medical field (at least in florida) does not spend as much time as they should with their patients. You all have helped me so much, it is the least I can do.
