On the calcium thing
Maybe someone else can confirm--but according to my dietician, you may be low on calcium even if your blood tests show normal. According to her, the surgery cuts off access to the part of the stomach that ordinarily processes calcium from food, so your body starts pulling calcium out of your bones and teeth in order to keep a certain amount circulating... thus the problems with osteoporosis and dental issues, as well. So you'll test normal, even though you're losing bone mass. I take 1500 mcg? mg? whichever, in calcium supplements every single day.

My first checkup after surgery, my teeth were harder to clean. I attributed it to being in ketosis for those few months.

"the surgery cuts off access to the part of the stomach that ordinarily processes calcium from food"
Close but it's the intestine, not the stomach. The first however many inches of intestine that hook to the stomach is where calcium and iron are best absorbed. They bypass this with the surgery and that's why we have to take supplements for those.

Well i thought i would post here instead of starting a whole new one. But i have not had a cavity since i had baby teeth. Which are gone now, so needless to say i am 34 years old and have Not 1 cavity. UNTIL TODAY!!!
I went to the dentist this morning and learned i have a small cavity. I'm like WTF? No cavitys in 20 years then bam 10 months out from WLS i get a freeking cavity? I am thinking it has to be related. What you do think? All my levels were fine. I just dont get it.

Hmmmm, that sounds better than a size 4 with just those few black ones here and there. Listen to me......I have so many dental issues I have not yet begun to face. I have had and am working out a dental phobia.....and I too got some bad teeth genetics. So I better hold off jokes until I get the courage to see what the real deal is when I get there. Gulp. My money only goes so far. I have a feeling I'll be deciding between some implants for my mouth and implants for my BF's mou.....oh, naughty....strike that from the record!!

Bridget:
It's ironic that you ask this question - I JUST left my dentist. I don't really have any of my own teeth left - they're all capped, crowned, or veneered within an inch of their little lives. However, it took a LOT longer to clean them this time, my gums were very sensitive.
BUT - the dentist was thrilled that I was off the Diet Pepsi! He's told me in the past that DP is my worse enemy. So, he did a little happy dance about that. But it took a long time to clean these suckers today.
I never took vitamins or supplements in the past, and even with the decrease in eating (post-surgery), I'm hoping my teeth are going to be better in the long run. That's a BIG hope!
