Default General Questions after Surgery

Can I drink coffee with non dairy creamer after surgery?

Can I drink decaffinated tea?

What kind of food should I have at my house when I get home from surgery?

What do you do if you're not hungry but you just feel your need to eat?

How soon after surgery did you start drinking the protein shakes?

Do you eat 3 scheduled meals per day or do you have to eat more often?

Does anyone drink propel fitness water and keep it down...should I stay away from it?

You can drink coffee if you like it. I personally don't drink coffee so I don't know what effect it has on you. Just make sure that the creamer doesn't have sugar in it.

You can definitely have decaf tea, they actually give it to you in the hospital so it's good to go. I now use regular tea myself.

As far as what types of foods to have at home... I'd say sugar free popsickles for sure, sugar free jello and some broth. Just don't stock up because you won't eat that much. If you want to get creamed soups now so you have them too it's ok but don't get too many of them, you won't use them.

You won't be hungry for a long time after surgery.. most likely. I still rarely get hungry, but that's me. Your first week just push fluids, you won't get any nutrition in that week anyway, but make sure you don't get dehydrated.

You can start the protein shakes when you are on the creamed soups phase. Also don't stock up on that stuff you may not like the ones you pick.. But if you get the mix at Costco or GNC and you don't like it, save the receipt because you can return for a full refund.

In the beginning I think you are allowed 5 small portions throughout the day and after 3 months you go down to 2??? Can't really remember... but I didn't even eat 3 meals a day until about 2 weeks ago or so. And I am 5 months out. I just couldn't take in that much. I had no appetite.

I have had propel and didn't throw it up.. but I rarely drink it because it is empty calories.. I think I had it twice.

Hope this helps. good luck to you.. take care and hope you have a safe and speedy recovery.

I had 3 small meals a day since I was not able to eat much and now Dr. Callery has placed me on 2 nutritious snacks in between because I need the nutrients. I just find it very difficult to eat, so it is a real challenge for me. I know everyone is different and many of my friends did the 5 small meals in the beginning and graduated to 3 later around 6 weeks. As for the Propel, I love it and it helps me get in more fluids because of the taste. I alternate that in between water. I like Crystal Light, too and that will be handy for you to have right after surgery. I wish you luck. All of Christina's answers to your questions are great..I second what she says!

I drink both hot, and iced tea. I try to drink the herbal, or green tea. I did and still do sometimes drink Propel. It's never made me sick. Also, sometimes I'll fix some ice water, squeeze a few slices of lemon and add a pack of Splenda. Tastes just like lemonade. I also drink a few cups of skim-milk. I really didn't like any of the pre-mixed protein drinks, so I make my own now with soy protein powder. I didn't "eat" any broth when I came home from the hospital, but I lived on yogurt. Just be careful of any chunks of fruit in it. Make sure you watch the sugar content of yogurt, though. Some have 40+ grams of sugar!!! Try the Carb Countdown yogurt. It tastes great and has lots of protein. Crystal Light and Sugar Free Kool-Aid are good, too. I could also eat oatmeal, but still cannot do cream of wheat or grits. Your belly will let you know what it will tolerate, trust me! Sometimes, you can eat something one day and do fine...and the next day it will make you sick. Our bellies can be tempermental at times.
Get some good vitamins...not the off-brand chemical stuff. Go to a natural food store and get some.
I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I was able to get in more liquid if I drank through a straw instead of just drinking from a glass. Remember to sip. If you gulp...it hurts.
Good luck and we'll see you on the losing side!!!

Another great smooth yogurt is Carb control by Dannon. I love them and they make them in smaller sizes (4 oz.) so I don't waste as much. It is low carb with higher protein (12 g).

I was Dr. Callery's 2nd case, too. You will be on the other side sooner than you think. Good luck and let us know when you get home how everything went. Take Care

Default Big Guy made it.....

I made it.....got home this afternoon in one piece. I spent an extra day in intensive care due to high blood pressure and high sugar but they knocked it down. I still hurt like h.ll but I will survive, I'ts great to be on the other side.

My wife stayed with me the entire time and was a saint. She was my quarterback in the big game. I highly recommend the buddy system, It works very well.

The care was great, the people were caring. Oh that catheter......that was an unatural event. I just had one shift of nurses that couldn't find there a.s from a hole in the ground...problems with the bed and getting a fan. Talked with the Director of Nursing today for about 30 minutes and told them about the need of bariatric patients and the service we demand from them. I want future patients to not have the stupid problem that I did. All in all I am doing well.

It's great not being hungry!!!!
