Feeling awful: Dumping without dump?
Weel, so much for my trouble free recovery. I had my two week check up yesterday and got advanced to the pureered stage and had no problems since surgery. I ate some chicken at 5 yesterday and all night I feel like I have to throw up, but can't. I feel flush and weak. I could not sleep all night and I came back to work today and still feel like I need to throw up. I feel like the description of all the dumping syndrome without actually the dumping part. Can you dump if you are constipated? Do some of you constantly feel like you need to throw up even though nothing is wrong. I keep thinking that the chicken is stuck in my pouch.

Erica:
What you've described doesn't sound like dumping. Dumping is always self-limiting. It lasts until your food is processed and then goes away on its own. Have you been able to eat anything else today? If not, I think you should at least check with your surgeon. I have heard of people having food get lodged and it must be removed.
By the way, constipation is not related to dumping. Dumping is related to food being introduced into the intestine, not when it is being eliminated.

What if the chicken was bad and you are suffering from food poisoning? I would talk to your doctor to be on the safe side...

Oh girl..I went camping and decided to eat some chicken, this was about 6(ish) and it got stuck and I could feel in my chest going up & down.I couldnt get it to go down or to come out.So the sun finally started coming up and the chicken decided to come out.
My issue was not chewing it well enough & I paid for it
So moral of the story chew chew chew chew chew and then chew some more!!!

It just feels stuck. I can eat cottage cheese and drink water still. I just feel like I need to throw something up. I chewed really good. They were Chicken wings that I had ordered and ate the night before without any problem. I was just thinking that my body was trying to dump but couldn't since I have been constipated the past few days. I think a dump is powerful enough to loosen anything from what I have read. The doctor called me in some anti-nausea medicine so I will pick that up after work and hopefully that works.
Thanks all,

I'm in my 3rd week post-op and I'm scared to death to try intact chicken or beef. Maybe you should start out a little easier, like tunafish or just baked fish. I think those go down easier.

Erica:
I'm so confused. When you talk about dumping, are you referring to an actual physical act of dumping food, i.e., barfing? Because WLS dumping is a different kind of feeling. You certainly have physical responses such as sweating, palpitations, nausea, sleepiness, all-over sick feeling, but I don't think dumping symptoms can dislodge anything in your body. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting, but that's not a typical dumping response. Hmmm...I think you may be talking about physically ridding your body of something, which is not really WLS dumping, per se. I may be wrong. Anyone else care to contribute?

I think the problem is constipation. Can you actually feel nausious if you are constipated? If so, the what should I take? I read somwhere not to take lazatives. I have the wls dumping thing all messed up and yes, I should not have tried Chicken yet. I thought purered meant chewed up really good. I think I am going to stick with my protien shakes for a bit more.

Erica:
You can certainly be nauseous and really uncomfortable from constipation. I still have problems with hard stools, so I take a stool softener every day. People have posted about a herbal tea called "Smooth Move" that is supposed to be great for moving your bowels in a nontraumatic manner. You also might ask your surgeon if you can try Milk of Magnesia. Please don't let your constipation go on forever. It's really uncomfortable and can be painful. In extreme cases, your bowels can become impounded and that's definitely no fun at all!
I think you're making a good choice by going back to liquids for a short time. You're probably not ready for chicken just yet. I STILL have problems with chicken if it's too dry or if I don't chew it up thoroughly. Generally, chicken seems to be troublesome for a lot of WLS patients.
By the way, pureed food is liquified so that you can almost drink it. Yucky, I know, but necessary at first. Good luck with your food. It really does get much better down the road.

Thanks. My doctor said that I could try MOM, so I just took some. I hope that is what it is. I have never been consipated like this before. I will not be going off the doctor's diet again. I paid all night and day.
