Wow - it seems to vary somewhat. I had to fill out my medical leave papers today, and it asked me to fill in how long I think I will be off. So I called the clinic and they said 2 weeks (for lap rny). That's what I put down, but then I was worried about what if I'm tired, or naseated, or sick or something - and it takes longer than 2 weeks?
I had my gallbladder out a few years ago and I went back in about a week - no pain, but I wished I'd stayed off an extra week because even though I have a desk job, I was really worn out. When I came back, I checked in with the employee health nurse and she was surprised that I didn't stay out for the entire six weeks. She said that mostly all the other people with gb surgery were gone for six (I think they must've milked it!)
I hope I can extend my time off if I need to...

I am taking the full four weeks because my physician has his patients on a protein shake and clear broth diet for four weeks post-op. It will be easier for me to do this (blender) at home. I have spoken to some of his patients and they have great ideas on how to jazz up the shakes when the need arises.
9 days to go...

I just took two weeks. That was only because the Dr. wouldn't give me the ok to drive until then. Otherwise, I could have gone back at one week. Of course, I was fortunate and didn't have complications.

I originally planned for 2 weeks, but we feeling pretty crummy, so it went to 3 weeks add on to that another hospital stay due to complications it was 4 weeks that I was off.
In answer to the question if you need more time off than you planned, if you are going to be getting disability, they will send you an extension form with your last check that needs to be signed by the doctor as to why the extension., which I had to do twice.
Hope

If after 2 weeks you still don't feel well enough to go back to work, just have your Dr. write a note extending your time off. Thats what I did and I had no hassles at all.

I had planned on 4 weeks (going back on Monday 12/12/05).
I have pretty much a desk job, but have two steep flights of stairs to
handle all day long, I went to visit yesterday and when I got to the top
of the stairs I was pretty dizzy. I'll probably take another week as they
are not pushing me.

My surgeon suggested 3 weeks. That turned out to be the most convenient as I was beginning soft foods. I also found that 3 weeks was just right as it took that long for my energy level to recover.

I am planning on taking 3 weeks off, but my work knows that that is "gove or take a week". They are very flexible, and I have the option of working partially from home so if I feel I can work sooner, I will. Depends on how you feel, and only you can be the judge of it. If you need to extend, talk to your doc,and ha can write you a note for work - you are protected with FMLA
