Water Loading
So I read the Pouch Rules for Dummies and wondering how many of you follow the water loading - before you eat your meals. I am finding so much information that contradicts other information. IE: to sip water throughout the day and not 2 hrs before or 2 hrs after vs. water loading to let the pouch feel full.
Another area states that exercise doesn't really make that much of a difference to weight loss in the first 12-18 months. Others say, start right away as soon as you can exercising after surgery. I certainly don't think it would harm us any.
Another is to eat all your protein first, then veggies/fruit and then starchy carbs. The dummies says to eat 1/2 your meal protein, then 1/4 of each of the others alternating bites of each so that the food doesn't stick together.
And to top it all off, I read that we are supposed to eat all our meal within 15 minutes. I have read many a time that we need to eat slow, chew and take up to an hour to eat. The shorter time makes for sense....but why such differences?
I can assume that its all different for each of us. The dummies indicates that we will have failure if we fail to understand and implement the water loading and if we don't fully understand it, then regain is high.
Can someone enlighten me? I leave tomorrow for my consult apt and won't be back here for a few days, and will check in then....with a surgery date...yippeee..
Take Care all and congrats to the many of you who have posted your surgery dates!

Hi Lisa...
First off, where can I get my hands on "Pouch Rules for Dummies"? Secondly, i would assume the "Dummies" is simply a guide, and whatever your doc advises on the other ossues whould be followed. You might want to go through "Dummies", and make a list of questions that may not have already been answered by him during your consult, or on his/her aftercare instructions.
Best of luck to you at your consult...let us know your date!

The pouch rules are more for people who are further out and or maintaining. Nothing I have read has said to take an hour to eat. Everything I have read says 15-20 minutes otherwise you end up grazing. I do not drink 1 hr before or sfter eating. I do not water load before eating. I am still only able to eat about 1/2 c of food at a meal. There are lots of info out there. Someone even posted that a Dr wrote that you should NOT eat if your not physically hungry.........well that means I would have eaten nothing in the past 5 months I still do not get physically hungry but I know my body needs to eat. I do eat my protein first but I will also have a bite of veggies along the way, it gets borning eating the same thing .

Lisa I will be awaiting to hear your re-birthdate . The Pouch rule for Dummies is a great guidline to follow but to be honest at some point you will develop your own routine. Not everyone takes that long to finish a meal but then I have heard some say it takes them some time to complete their meals. Exercise is always a plus(of course once you are released by your surgeon to do so).

Lisa, I am confused on this also. My doctor says that I should be taking 10 minutes to eat 1 ounce, that I should eat slow and chew a lot. But I find that if I eat slow, I eat a lot more so I have gotten to where I eat 1/2 cup of food in about 10-15 minutes now. I still chew very good, and I get full a lot quicker and stay full longer it seems. I have my 6 month follow-up in 2 weeks and this is something I wanted to talk to the doctor about.
Good luck at your consult!!!

In maintenance... now I'm yo-yoing up and down 10 lbs or so. I'm trying to find out how to stay at a set weight, it's rough.

The 1/2 hour+ eating rule was for while your pouch was healing and you were learning to eat again. After 6 months you should be finishing your meal within about 15 minutes. Taking too long would be like snacking - you could eat all day.
Water loading is for those people who are about a year out..... and get hungry and that helps stave off overeating by having the pouch a little full of water so you eat less to feel full.
As you can see, the rules change as you progress.

Yup to what Julie says. If you are taking longer than 15-20 mins to eat you are grazing. When you graze you take in more calories, too many calories isnt a good thing. In Feb I will be 2 years out and I still practice that rule.
As far as the rest of the info, not sure.

I strated water loading when my honeymoon period ended. It was about 6 months when I realized I could eat a lot more and really needed to load up on fluids in between meals.
