Default failed bypass surgery

Hello people, remember me?

Well, a lot has happend since I have last been on here in July. I had a total staple line breakdown 6 weeks after my original surgery. I was bleeding uncontrolably, throwing up bucketfulls of blood at a time, and the doctors didn't know what to do, or where I was bleeding from. On my third trip to the ER, my surgeon misdiagnosed me with an ulcer. While being treated for an ulcer in the hospital, I continued to throw up blood. I was transported to another hospital to see a gastric bypass specialist. He determined the staple line breakdown, and my nightmare began. There, I was hospitalized for 15 weeks, undegoing another surgery to repair my bypass and find the bleed, which also failed. I continued to throw up blood, until one day it just stopped. It was a miracle! I was actually facing a thrid surgery which would have removed my entire digestive system, hooking my esophagus to my small intestine, therefore being on liquids for the rest of my life. Over the 15 weeks, I had numerous blood tranfusions (apporox. 80 units) to save my life, the doctors told me that I almost died twice. It was a very scary time, and I am so glad to be alive and home.

I have been home for 3 weeks now, and things are going well. The nightmare seems to finally be over, I hope. I have lost almost 100 pounds, thanks to being in the hospital and starving since July. My nutrition levels suck My hair is so thin, I have no energy, and I always feel like crap. But I am alive, thank God, and I will get better. And thinner. I have to do it the old fashioned way now, lotsa exercise and good foods, but I can do it!! I will NEVER have surgery again...not even the boob job I was hoping for before

And that was my summer. Thanks for letting me vent!

So sorry to hear about your bad experience. What a strong person you must be to pull through all of that. What did you mean you have to do it the old fashioned way now? Did they have to totally un-do your bypass (I don't even know if that is possible) or what did they do so you have to do it the old fashioned way?

My staple line breakdown caused my bypass to totally fail. I have a whole stomach again, instead of the little pouch. The doctors tried to fix it with a second surgery, but I had another staple line breakdown. I dont know how to explain it any better, Im sorry. So, instead of losing weight by having a small pouch, I have a whole, regular sized stomach...which means I have to diet and exercise to lose more weight.

Wow Jade I am so sorry you have gone through so much but like you said God bless you have made it through. I commend you for sharing your story because even though it is horrible what you went through I think it is great for pre-op people to read stories of the bad side of having WLS. Everyone needs to know that there is another side to having GBS. You can't walk into this eyes wide shut, must know all the dangers and set your mind for if those things were to happen to you could you handle it, how would you get through it, are you prepared if something as rare as death occurs. I have been through such hell in my life being MO, I was more then ready to take it head first. I even wrote a letter to each of my family members and even my funeral arrangments. It was hard but my life is in Gods hands. I am so glad you are home and safe and my prayers are with you. Take it easy and congrats on the weight loss.

I guess I'm also missing what happened. The way I understand it your new pouch is seaperate from your old stomach with a bypass so if the staples failed it would open up the pouch but not to the old stomach. I also don't see how a staple failure could happen twice. The whole thing sound strange. What ever happened to you it's a shame. Hopefully you'll keep off your 100 lbs and lose some more!

I totally agree with you! I was ready to die for this surgery. I basically did the same thing as you...writing letters and explaining what I wanted to happen if I did die. Yes, what I went through is not normal, but people do need to know that flukes happen. I guess...some things just aren't ment to be...you know? Thank you for your prayers and kind words
