Unhappy Paranoid, worried and frustrated....

I am about only 9 days out but I am worried that I am eating the wrong stuff. My surgeon gave me NO instructions but did tell me to talk to my nutritionist. My nutritionist is the one who told me to drink the juice that had 15 grams of sugar in it am made me dump. Soooo I have been trying to just figure out what to eat by reading info online. Right now I am eating, Farina (like a cream of wheat cereal) for breakfast, and I can eat the whole serving which but it take me like 30 min to eat. I am worried that I shouldn't be able to eat that much so soon.

Anyway then for lunch I eat soup, today I got the broccoli and cheese from Panera...I was able to eat half of it in about half and hour and then I had the other half for dinner.

Some nights for dinner I have refried beans with a little cheese on them. I am also eating jello, and fat free/sugar fee pudding, and on thanksgiving I had some mash potatoes.

I try to drink as much as I can and get in about 36 - 48 oz. a day. I take a protein supplement that has 15 grams of protein in it three times a day so I cam getting in 45 grams of protein.

I am just reading that people at my stage are still on a clear liquid diet and I am eating cream soup and refried beans??

I am going to see my doctor next week so I can ask him then but in the mean time I am like almost scared to eat because I don't know what to eat?!?

Just to help me can anyone tell me what they were eating at this point??

Amanda,

I cant imagine that any surgeon would send you out with no instructions on your dietary intake following surgery, thats his job.First thing you need to do is call him and make him provide you with a diet plan.As far as the nutritionist they obviously have not delt with WLS patients.

At this point you should be consuming only clear liquids ie:boulion, broth, sugar free jello and a protien supplement that is also clear. No cream soups, refried beans or vegies at this time.

I am 4 years out and dont remember everything and others might have a better idea as their surgeries are more recent.I hope you find the answers you need.

I was eating soft foods on day 6. I'd suggest limiting your meals to 15-20 minutes. That's the amount of time it takes for your stomach to tell your brain that it's full. Your pouch is about the size of a large egg. Liquids pass through more easily, therefore you can eat quite a bit of soup. It will eventually relax to the size of a lemon or so in 3 months, at which point you will really feel like you're pigging out. Some people use small spoons and shot glasses to give them an idea of how much food to consume at one meal this early out. You're striving for 6-7 itsy meals a day to get in enough nutrient at this point.

I haven't had surgery yet but from the support group I've learned that my doctor puts you on protien shakes for the first two weeks. Then I think you move into other liquids for mushy foods for awhile.

I was able to have cream soup at day 7 as well as cream of wheat, yogurt, jello and even soft cheese. I would put protein powder in my yogurt to up my protein intake. I also agree that you should limit to what you can eat to about 20 minutes.

Your'e doing great on your water! I'm impressed. I had the hardest time with that. But, I was eating soups and protein drinks from day 4 and have had no problems. Every doctor is different and every patient is different. Though I'm shocked your Dr. didn't give you any guidelines. Oh, and I think the 20 min. limit would probably be a good idea.

The day I was released from the hospital, day 4, they gave me scrambled eggs, yogurt and orange juice for breakfast and mashed potatoes and creamed soup for lunch. I was given a very good detailed list of foods I could/can eat from my doctor and one from the hospital. I was only on liquids being, SF jello and broth, for only 3 days.

Each doctor is different, both in the type of foods you should be eating, and how long it should take you. I wasn't on soft foods until 3 weeks out, and I've been told that my meals should be 30 minutes, not 20 or 15. He says that's the reason I've been getting sick is I've been trying to eat too fast. But, like I said, they're all different.

I am able to eat about a cup of farina, but as far as meat goes steak , chicken etc. I can only eat about 2 oz at a time. Consistency has a lot to do with it. I was on soft foods by day 10 I was having some refried beans fat free with a little sour cream and cheese. I was also having yogurt, ricotta, cottage cheese, chedder cheese, mashed sweet potato, scrambeled egg made with skim milk, SF choclate pudding with protein powder added in. I did limit my time to 15 minutes to eat though.
