Default Exercise issues - need some wisdom

OK, so I'm eight weeks out from my surgery. Doing fine on weight loss, no complaints there.

Before I had the surgery, I was one of the fit fat - walked a lot, biked a lot (at home on a recumbent bike - I wasn't going to hang my booty over a regular bike seat ). I didn't break any landspeed records for walking, but I probably made about an 18- to 20-minute mile.

Right now I'm walking about three or four times a week. Last night I walked a little over a mile--it took me 32 minutes. I was utterly exhausted by about the 3/4 mile mark, and never got that second wind that used to carry me through. I know for a fact that I'm hauling 40 fewer pounds, and it seems to be getting harder, not easier, to walk.

Am I just trying to push this too fast? Or is it possible to get my exercise ability back? It's the only thing I miss from the Fat Old Days...

Lisa...

I am not sure whether or not you had lap or open, but you could simply be pooped out from surgery. You were cut open, and rearranged, and your body is still healing form the shock. Keep up the excercising, but listen to you body and stop when you're tired. You don't want to overdo it. You may also want to switch up the routine too...

I wish you the best...please keep us posted!

Walking seemed a bit harder for me as well. But I continued to do it, and build up. Like I've already posted, water aerobics has helped me SO much. I love it, and definately have a lot more energy since starting. Maybe you need another activity besides just walking... And you don't need to be down on yourself or over due it and wind up back in the hospital. Your body will let you know what's it up for! Good luck!

Default With You On The Excersise

Hi I'm with you on the excersise and overall stamina. I am 4 weeks out and althought I take all the vitamins and nutrients I still don't have my energy level back as it was Pre-Op. I have days when I am feeling great and then days when I feel utterly exhausted and basically just have to lie down.

Everyone keeps telling me this is normal and your body is still healing ( I do still feel occassional burning and ucomfortableness from the stitches inside).

Yesterday I missed work, because I just felt wiped out? My back had pain my chest had pain, I'm not sure what was going on. This was very discorting to me as I am never one to miss work from being sick (very rarely). Someone thought I had let myself get dehydrated (possible), I hadn't drank a lot of water over the weekend. Has anyone else experience this? I am really trying to stay positive because I do see the weight coming off, but at the same time I'm still a little depress because I just came seem to do things like I use to.

I hope to be in the gym next week.

Dee.... you really need to stay hydrated! I truely think this is what has saved me. I sip all day everyday. I never stop. Also keep in mind, our doctor reccomends you take a full six weeks off before returning to work. Obviously they feel your body needs that long to completely heal. If you feel the need to rest, then do it. Your body knows what it needs!

Default Thanks

You are right, I will have to consistently pay attention to my water intake and to what my body tells me in general. I will be glad when I can consistently feel like my old upbeat engertic self again.

I have another question, I will have my surgeon tomorrow when I have my 4 week appointment. Is drinking alcohol okay?

From what I know, we shouldn't have alcohol for three months, and then I am told that things like beer and wine often lead to dumping. So it should be more of the hard stuff. I also know that it usually only takes one drink LOL But all doctors are different, so you might want to ask yours.

It took me awhile to get my energy level back, at 13 weeks out I still fight it sometimes but I get in as much excercise as I can without wearing myself to the bone and that is all you can do.
