Soul Food
Jeanine,
If you go down the dry bean/rice aisle at the store you'll see black eyed peas. They are tan with a little black "eye" and they're wonderful when cooked with salt pork, hog jowls or fat back (all parts of a pig) and some onions. They can be eaten alone or if you put them over white rice it's called Hoppin' John. Collard greens are a dark leafy green veggie similar to kale. It's pretty pungent and has a distinctive taste, but prepared with bacon, onions, salt and a little sugar it's wonderful. These are foods that are traditionally served on New Year's Day in the south for luck and prosperity through the new year.
The peas have 13g of protein in one cup and the collards don't have much protein, but are very high in calcium.

Not making fun, but it's so funny to me that someone does not know what black-eyed peas and collards are. LOL I know it's mostly a southern food, but I thought everyone has "heard" of it. Jeannie, look in the canned food isle also and see if you can find them in the can. They are just a small brown pea with a black dot on them. You'll understand when you see them. They are great for protein. When I was on pureed food, I ate them alot. Here in the south, we crumble a piece of cornbread on our plate and put the peas on top of it and mix it up and there.......you have peas and cornbread. YUUUUMMMM! Makes me hungry thinking about it. Collards look almost like fresh turnip greens to me and look almost just like them when cooked, but they definitely have their own distinct flavor even though similar. They have a much stouter taste. I like mine with hot sauce dribbled on them (hot sauce=red and green hot peppers in a bottle that has vinegar poured over it to fill the bottle and sit for weeks) What's funny is the Panhandle of Florida around Ft. Walton Beach has what they call a Collards Festival every year. LOL People buy them by the black garbage bags full! LOL

HMMM the black eyed pees sound good. I'll have to try. The other stuff that you put with it I don't know. I've never been to the south. I'm CA girl born and raised. The only "southern" food my Mom made was fried chicken.

My mom's family was from Arkansas, and we had cornbread, black eye peas, collards. We called them "Crowder Peas". Don't know why.
My Grampa's favorite dessert in the whole world was a big glass with cornbread crumbled in it, with buttermilk poured over it.

Aaah, memories
Donna, that was one of my mom and dad's favorites too! They'd also put rice in a glass, fill it with milk, add sugar & cinnamon. Blecch! It was like cold soupy rice pudding! That's just WRONG!
I can't do buttermilk unless it's in a biscuit, pancakes or fried chicken batter!

ME EITHER!!!!!!! DOUBLE EWWWWWWW!!!!! My dad loved it though. My mom would always eat cornbread crumbled in a glass with regular milk poured over it. My dad would eat that also when he didn't have buttermilk. I think my dad had some form of it every night before bed. I never really got into any of it.
Donna, we have crowder peas here, but they are itty bitty round brown peas. They are delicious. They are a little different than black-eyed peas here in my area. The crowder peas dont have a black spot on them and the black-eyed peas are sorta the shape of a kidney, where as I said the crowder peas are more round. Either way, they are BOTH great with cornbread and a green onion fresh from the garden! YUMMMMMMM.....geezzzz now I'm REALLY HUNGRY!!!!!! I could also go for a fresh sliced tomato with that (the WHOLE tomato)! I love fresh garden tomatoes better than any cake or ice cream.

Yeah, I am not into buttermilk unless under those same circumstances. It just tastes like spoiled milk to me. And we always had black eyed peas--with the green onion and ham hock. I still love them, but can't find anyone to eat them with.
So, RainDear, ARE you having a holiday party again this year? I ask because my daughter is getting married on New Year's eve, so that means I have New Years party plans. I also found 2 beautiful formals that I can't decide between, so I bought them both--more of me finding brand new clothes at a resale shop. I had tried on a $150 dress at the bridal store, then stopped in on a whim to one of my thrift stores. I found both of them, absolutely gorgeous, with their original tags still on--got them both for $50. The fixed income gods were watching over me. My problem is that they are both really cool MOB dresses, and I can't decide which one to wear at the wedding. If you have a party, I will take both dresses to the next support meeting and solicit votes for the best holiday party dress/MOB dress.
I'll bring black eyed peas if anyone wants....

Last year was such a hit, I think I must!
One thing though is I may ask for guests to pitch in for the D.J., he was great but pretty spendy!
Do you think that is tacky??

Rain, I don't think that's tacky, makes sense to me. I'll try to come, just not the weekend of the 15th of Dec. My nephew should be graduating from Marine boot camp that weekend, so I'll have family in town.
