my friend and i are having a christmas party as well. we were trying to think of an activity (along with a gift exchange and dancing) and we came up with groups getting together and re-enacting a scene from the movie A Christmas Story. While everyone else is mingling, a group of 4 or 5 will go into a separate room where there will be props from the film (leg lamp, bb gun, santa costume, etc.) and act out one of the many classic scenes from the movie. They'll also be filming themselves. So, once each group is done, we'll gather around the TV and watch everyone's scenes.

We find that a video camera can offer up a lot of party entertainment. For Halloween last year, we did a video scavenger hunt. We gave the party-goers a list of things to either find or do and they had to film themselves doing those things. Some of them were: to stand (with your costume on) in a store window for 20 seconds, the group do a conga line through a restaurant, offer to wash a stranger's windshield at a gas station, wrap a stranger with toilet paper like a mummy, find a poorly decorated house, stand in front of a house that looks haunted, and a few more. Everyone had a blast! They had fun actually doing the things, coming back to talk about them, and then, of course, watching the videos.

We considered doing a holiday rendition of the video scavenger hunt, but we didn't want to repeat ourselves too much. But we knew we wanted to do something with a camera.

I have a few ideas that might be fun. First and foremost, we will be dressed to the nines, we need to have a dance floor. A nice mixture of old standards and current upbeats--no mosh pits or "johnny be good" types of things. Just the opportunity for us to dance with our beloveds.

An ornament exchange is always nice, and has nothing to do with eating.

Karaoke anyone?

Now, what is the official word on the attire? Are suits okay, short dresses, long dresses, gotta be a tux? Please let us know so we can figure out how to be dressed out to be checked out.

Yep, got the Karaoke, we are setting that up in a room in the house and outside we have a fire ring as well as heaters for the patio...its huge 25x30 for the dance floor.

I need some one to do the music, it sounds like you have a good handle on the right tunes...you want to volunteer??

I have a few games up my sleeve that do not include too much effert, all very optional.

the attire is just for fun. Anything you want is fine I have people coming tuxes as well as Christmas Hawaiin shirts. so what ever you want. Most of the ladies are dressing up and I do not want the clothes to keep anyone from coming. It is all good!!!

Okay Rain . . . I'm actually posting, not just "lurking".
I enjoyed your group on Tuesday, thank you.

An ornament or gift exchange under $10 is always fun.
We play the version where each person draws a number to determine the order you get to choose a gift. One person picks their gift and opens it. The next person has the option of taking someone's gift that has already been opened, or selecting an unopened gift. A gift is "frozen" once it has been stolen 3 (2 for a large group) times. All gift selections are frozen once the last gift is opened.

Default Party!

How about putting a famous name on each person's back when they enter and they have to ask other people yes/no questions to guess who it is. Anything from Bambi-OK not a person, to Monica Lewinsky is fair game! I'll even prepare the names if you want! I love gift exchanges, and maybe a nice thing would be to collect food from folks, or gifts to donate to a charity.

Default Well...Yeah!

Of course you should be planning a holiday party for this year! From what I hear you are the hostess with the mostess! Besides, think of all the newbies that will come this year. I only joined the forum the week of the Summer Stapler Party so I couldn't go to that, but I might be well on my way to being a loser by the holidays!

Of course, if it was too much work or inconvenient, maybe someone else can take over the planning. BTW, I have a Traditional New Year's Day Soul Food party that everyone is invited to. Of course it revolves around eating...Fried Chicken, Black Eyed Peas, Collard Greens and Corn Bread. I may have to make some adjustments to the menu this year!
