Bama:
I stopped having a period for more than six months last year, but I think it was actually due to my screwed-up hormones, not WLS. (I'm just on the cusp of menopause.) Unfortunately, my God-awful periods started again and they're now coming every month. I'm 49 friggin' years old, for God's sake. I'm so done with this sh*t! Yuck, yuck and DOUBLE YUCK!

Have you gotten checked for Fibyroid (sp?) tumors? My mom had them and told me that she had horrible cramps and VERY heavy periods that came almost 2-3 weeks apart.

Wow, that sucks! I hope you stop soon... I wonder how long our hormones stay crazy after the surgery. Your body must think you're getting younger and younger!

I think you are all right
When I was 28 I had some major kidney (stone) surgery. The stone got stuck at the ureter/bladder junction and had done horrendous damage coming down. The periods that I got for a good long time (year?) after that major surgery were almost beyond what I could stand, and I am a tough old bird. So I see one reason as being the nerves and muscles that got cut.
Then there is the hormone situation. I agree that the overbearance of estrogen could cause the pain and increased flow. The fact that mo women often are not capable of conception, and then suddenly have estrogen for days is one of the reasons why we are so fertile after wls.
Then there is the fibroid/adenomyosis factor. Many of us, mo or not, get fibroids in their 30's and 40's. Adenomyosis is endometriosis within the walls of the uterus, and it's generally thought of as a precancerous condition. The main thing associated with endometriosis and fibroids is gawdawful pain and bleeding for days. Like wearing 2 tampons at a time and a napkin too, and having to change them all every hour.
So I think you all are right. I had most of these things and had a hysterectomy at 38. Was the best thing I ever did, and now wls is the second best. I thank Creator every day that I don't have to bleed anymore.

Well...jeez where so I start?! My periods are so outta whack!! I had one from 10/23/05-12/1/05 (not the forst time like that - early in 2005 I bled from 2/1/05-4/15/05), and some days were light, and some I thought my insides were coming out (changing tampons every 15-30 minutes and massive clotting). In April I went to my gyn,and my pap came back abnormal, so she set me up to have a pap once a quarter, and she wanted me to take Provera to level out my hormones. I did it the first month, but had the nastiest cramps that I stopped taking them without consulting her. Then I didn't have a period for a couple of months (I thorouly enjoyed that), and had a pap in August which was abnormal again and she chided me for not taking the meds. When I called her in December to do something to stop that wacky period, I had to take a verbal beating from her (I love her - she is the greatest), and she said I had to take it, no questions. So I take it the first 5 days of the month. In December is both stopped the month and a half long period and started the regular period. I took it again the first 5 days of this month, and am waiting for the gush to start. Its almost like I get a 7-10 day period in 3-4 days because I bleed so heavily.
Wow - That sure was a "glad to know you" moment!! Thanks for listening - I am dreading my whole cycle after surgery!!!

My doc tells us to NEVER take an anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, unless we have to and if we do to take tums with it. Anti-inflammatories thin out the mucus in your stomach lining and make it more likely for you to get an ulcer. Ulcers + tiny pouch = BAD! At least thats what we've been told and hes been doin this for a very very long time so Im not takin any chances! Just my 2 cents...

Mine were really heavy, used to get really bad cramps, and lasted for about 5 days. Now they're lighter, I only have cramps if it's really cold and they only last 3 or 4 days, so the surgery made my period better.
