Default Number of meals a day

My dietican insists that I need to be eating six meals a day. I've tried (swear!) but find it consistently impossible to eat that many times a day. Even at five meals, I find myself eating the last one at like 9 pm, and I'm uncomfortable all night with food in my pouch.

The Pouch Rules are largely written for the post-honeymoon folks, but are insistent that you shouldn't eat more meals a day than three.

How many times a day do you folks eat?

I tried to follow ALL the rules about # of meals, vitamins, etc., but I was way to sick (and way to full late at night; once it all came up after I fell asleep) so I'm doing "what" I can do w/o being sick. I try to sip on water all day long and fit in a protein bar, shrimp, cottage cheese, chili from Wendy's where I can.

Hey Lisa,

I know exactly how you feel. I have a hard time eating 3 meals a day, nevermind 6 like my nutritionist wants me to eat. I would say that i eat about 3 meals a day, and sometimes i will throw in a snack if i have time. Is not that i dont want to eat, its that i dont have the time to eat. I think befor ehte surgery, it was easy for us to grab something on the go, and now we have to plan a meal and take time out of our day to eat it. I have a question also, how many calories do you think your eating a day? I am eating about 500cal a day, and was told by my doctor that it was def not enough. My mom was there and told her that, from what she sees, i am not even getting 5oo cal a day. They have told me to carry arround nuts and make 2 snacks a day out of them. Maybe thats a meal option for you?

Default In the 800 cal range

Ashley - first, good luck on the gallbladder surgery... I'll be thinking about you.

I guess I'm eating in the 800 calorie range - I average about 200 calories a meal, usually about four meals a day. And I'm pretty good about getting my protein in the 50 to 60 gram range - I average out at about 15 grams of protein a meal. Some lower, some higher.

My only problem that showed on my last tests about two weeks ago was I'm low on Vitamin A. I'm supposed to be drinking carrot juice, but can't quite gag it down. One more week, and I'll be able to eat real carrots. One of those a day is supposed to fix it.

I just don't see how I'm ever going to hit six meals a day... and my dietician insists that's what I need to do for the rest of my life. I'm not sure I believe that, and I'm not sure I could eat that much, even so.

Lisa I know there are rules but sometimes those rules don't work for everyone and in time we all develop our own routine or way of eating. It will take time to get it down packed. I hope all works out with your vitamin A.

Nope... never occurred to me... I put my blender away as soon as I got off pureed food. Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try.

I have 3 meals and 2 protein snacks, normally yogurt or cottage cheese. I'm told I shouldn't be worrying about calories right now, but I don't know how I'm eating enough to stay alive

It's a good thing your body has plenty of stored energy to use!

I think the question is more about what you consider a meal to be. Early out, a meal is a handful of nuts. Just a snack to the average person. Heck, just taking the vitamins was a meal by itself! Later on, a meal may consist of some protein and a bit of carb and some veggies. Still may not look like a full meal to the average person. As you're able to eat more voulme at one time, then you move to less frequent meals. But, it still all depends on what you can tolerate at the time. You do the best you can during whatever stage you're at.

hey Lisa,
Thanks so much for the well wishes and prayers! Eww carrot juice! lol But if it helps with your vitamin A problem then def do it. You seem to be eating enough to me, but i'm not a doctor. Maybe your able to consume enough calories in your 3 meal? I'm not sure what the correct way of doing things are, because it varies from doctor to doctor, but it seems like your doing great and the weight is comming off! Good luck!
