Default Always Thirsty

Hi,
I had my surgery on 8/2 and I am always thirsty. I can't seem to drink enough water and we all know that we can't gulp. I also can't get this yucky taste (bad breath) out of my mouth. Any suggestions?????

Also, I am still only able to eat 2 oz at a time and only 3 maybe 4 times a day. Is this normal and how in heavens am I going to get the 50 grams for protein in a day????

I am still thirsty all of the time and I have a hard time drinking a whole protein shake. I usually can only drink 1/4 to 1/2 of a shake. I always wonder the same thing you are asking.

The bad breath thing, well mine is still here and I chew a lot of gum. I was warned though not to accidently swallow gum, so sometimes I freak out and just spit it out after the bad taste goes away. Kelly said use chlorets or chew on parsley, but I just can't see myself runnning around with parsley in my purse

Default Normal

It's all normal, if that's any consolation. Just sip as much and as often as you can. As for eating, try to eat high protein foods as much as possible. That will help with the protein, but you should be supplimenting with the wonderful flavorfull protein shakes we all know and love.

The bad breath is a sign of ketosis and is also very normal at this stage. Take it as a good sign that your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing right now. I used to suck on clorets or certs. I think certs has a sugar free brand now. If not, just sucking on one now and then won't be enough sugar to dump on, but it will help with the ketosis.

Hope that helps,

Thanks Dale,
It is so nice to know that I am not the only one and I really needed the laugh. Yah, the whole protein thing is concerning me because I can only intake 2-3 oz but I have decided that I am not going to worry about that. I am now concentrating on introducing new foods and seeing what I can and cannot eat and getting into an exercise routine. Thjanks again!!!

Default Kristi and Dale,

Dale, Parsley in the purse! You crack me up.

Kristi,
Thanks for asking the questions I had about bad breath and protein. I try to do a 1/2 protein shake in the morning, but find that I dump on that! I'm still on cream soups so I don't have a lot of options for protein. I'll pick up some breath mints, sugar free ofcourse.

At 3 months out, I can only handle 3-4 oz of food at a time depending on consistency and ability to chew thoroughly. Focusing on the highest protein content for the weight, I eat mostly fish, nuts, chicken and protein bars. Occasionally I'll slurp down half a protein drink. Reading labels is very important. Take chili for instance, I've seen protein content anywhere from 3 g to 13 g/serving with each being about the same amount of calories. Many processed products use sugar or fat as fillers.

Don't fret. Just do the best you can. Give yourself some time and start learning about good eating habits. Take the time to feel what your body is doing and how it handles/digests different foods. It's really quite neat to sit down and really think about eating and not just noshing away just because.

I am thirsty a lot too. I'm almost 4 months out. I have found that I'm now beginning to "chug" water again. Sipping was always so annoying to me because something about the "chugging/gulping" helped with the thirst. Weird huh? haha I think we just need a lot more liquids than we always have room to drink. I also had the breath issue. Good to know now why! That has improved as well.
