Default Good news and Bad news from the Doctor

Hey all,

Went to the doctors today and i recieved some good news and some bad news. They weighed me in, and I lost 50lbs in about 2 and a half months! It's amazing, I never thought this could happen to me. I am so excited to start the rest of my life in a healthy way. Now for the not so good news. I have posted that i had been getting bad pains and vomiting when they got very intense. My doctor told me today the gallbladder has to come out after reviewing my bloodwork and the Ct scan. I was not happy about this to say the least, but i would do just about anything to stop the pains and vomiting(happens at least once a day). He wants to wait 2 weeks so that the incisions from GBS are fully healed, and wants to take it out around thanksgiving.

I have a few question for all of you that have had it do. How is the pain of the surgery compared with GBS? How long did it take you to recover from the surgery? And lastly, were there any side affects to having it taken out? Thanks so much for all your help. I was telling my mom today at the doctors office, i dont know what i would have done, had it not been for this site and all of you. I know most of you are on the other side of the country, but it feels like your so close to home. Thanks again for all the suppot and great feedback, i truly appreciate it!

Oh Im so sorry to hear this. It is something that I have been worried about happening to me. I just had my GBS 10 days ago and the pain of recovery is still very fresh in my mind. A neighbor of mine had her's out and she was in a lot of pain from what I recall, my mom went to the hospital daily to see her to help her walk as the nurses were not assisting her. So perhaps it is the same type of pain? I dont know, but many well wishes for you.

Hope

Well the good news is im not in pain all the time, but when i have an attack it is unbarable. The only comfortable way to be is in the fetal position. The doctor also gave me pain meds to hold me over for a couple weeks untill the surgery so the other wounds from gbs to heal, so they take the edge off a little. I try not to take them though because i am unable to get any school work done and they make me a little loopy.

Question Actigall?

Ashley:

Were you prescribed Actigall by your surgeon after gastric bypass surgery? I'm curious, because my surgeon prescribes Actigall post-operatively for those patients with gallbladders--in order to prevent gallbladder attacks. Gallbladder problems are one of the more common side effects of weight loss surgery.

I hope your gallbladder removal goes well.

I was perscribed actigall after having an attack and a CT scan found sludge in my gallbladder. The actigall made me very sick with almost flu like symptoms. I was contantly running to the bathroom to vomit. I couldn't afford to be sick like that, due to the fact that i'm in college and have classes all day. My doctor took me off of it and i am still getting the pains and vomit when they get intense. He said that even if I didnt get sick from the Actigall it still might not have been 100% effective, so i might have needed to have my gallbladder removed regardless.

I just had mine out in August. It is no where near as bad as wls! You will actually (atleast I did) feel better when you wake up. There is a little soreness but it's really minor. I know this is the last thing you want to go through but it's necessary and you'll feel much better after. It's only 4 tiny incisions-two with 3 staples each (one in your belly button the other below your ribs), and 3 with 1 staple each down your rib cage. Sorry it's kinda hard to explain. I felt better as soon as I woke up and went right home, back to school the next day.

Sharp takes the gallbladder out during GBS because its so common for the attacks to start with rapid weight loss. Isn't it strange how different doctors perform differently?

Ashley I haven't had my Gallbladder out but I just wanted to offer you my support and prayers. I can't imagine what you have been going through. I am just glad the problem has been found and now can be corrected. Better days lay ahead. Keep smiling. Congrats on the 50 pounds gone forever.

Ashley,
I am so sorry to hear that you have to go thru this. I had my gallbladder out 15 years ago and unfortunately due to the size of one of the stones (avocado pit size) they had to do it open, not lap. It was tough. For me it was worse than the WLS (also open). But to not have to go thru anymore gallbladder attacks was a God send. They were the worst thing I have ever experienced. I would have rather had my boys back to back (9 & 10 lbs, natural childbirth) than to have another attack. I wish you the best and a quick recovery.

Default Question about Actigall

A question for those of you who took (or are taking) Actigall: is it easy to take? I mean the iron is rough on me, so I've put off getting the Actigall prescription filled, although I know I need to do it very soon now (within the next week).
