Mike,
What does your doctor/nutritionist say? Salad can be really hard on the body, so be careful, just chew until there's nothing left if you decide to go for it.

I went to Soup Plantation about that time and just got a little salad with a few toppings and cut it up really small with no problem.

Mike I will be honest my doctor requested that I wait until I was 3 months but I was eating salad at 2 months out. I was so craving them too. But my salads included Spinach salad with chopped up chicken and tamato(without the seeds). It was great and it went down so well. But please make sure it is ok for you to have but I am "guessing" if you are eating steak that salad should be a breeze for you to get down and digest.

I was told I could have soft meats. Such as deli, canned or other soft meats. Fish has been my best friend. I ate chicken the other day. I am only 10 days out. I chewed it really well. I made a salad with dinner but I didn't eat that. I just stuck to baby sized bites of chicken and potatos. I was told though that I could have salad at about 6 weeks, but that I should eat it after I ate my protein. Doubt I will have room!

Must be something in the air! I haven't wanted anything but salad here lately. Had a great one today at Panera Bread Company-Bistro Steak. It has gorgonzola cheese and steak with mixed greens and a balsamic vinagrette. Fabulous! I didn't try salad until I was 3 mo out.

Ok, so am am getting so confused about what I will be able to eat after surgery. I posted 3 weeks ago about what to eat, but didn't get much response. I am stunned to hear that you are eating red meat and chicken..particularly this early out. I have a doc appt. in the morning...he wants me to consider VBG, over the RNY but I have made up my mind after talking to lots of people here and others in Canada. I have been having dreams all week about food...as I knew this doc apt was coming. I really didn't think I would be able to eat much meat, rice, vegetable after the surgery....I was thinking a life of mush.....cheese, eggs, protein drinks, soups and later on some fruit and chicken. ( i hear that chicken can be bothersome to most) I know everyone is different but I still really don't get the food thing and yes I have been reading the nutrition section of this forumn. SO I am very glad to hear that people are able to go to restaurants, have a little of normal food....its a bright light for me. Quantity and bulk eating has been my problem my whole overweight life. I cook really well, so that doesn't help control my portions.

My Doc gave me a binder of the things to eat. At first its liquids. Then soft foods after that it is mostly protein and then other foods if you can work them in. From what I hear after awhile you can eat anything in moderation. I have been to parties with these girls, they eat just like anyone else. They just don't eat as much even if they are a year out or more. Don't worry you can eat after WLS, just not right away.

Thanks...thats very reassuring. How much sugar is too much? What about fat....ie: cooking with, meat with fat - or good fats like avocado and nuts?

I stuck with the guidelines my nutritionist and doctor specified. They are a Center of Excellence for BCBS and have been performing RNY since the 80's.

It went like this postop:

First two weeks:
2 ounces of Ensure or Boost 3 times a day, Water, Broth, Sugar Free Popsicles

Week Three:
Still taking Ensure for 2 meals, start to substitute soft foods like cheese, eggs, refried beans, mashed potatoes. Begin Vitamin Regimen of 2 Flintstone Completes, 1 250 B12, and 1000 mg of Liquid Magnesium Calcium Citrate.

Week Four:
Stop Ensure. Add Seafood...I ate Tuna, Crablegs, Shrimp, Broiled Fish. Add cooked vegetables like green beans, garden peas, asparagus.

Was cautioned against corn. Broccoli gives gas

Week Five:
Add Chicken (if tolerated, otherwise wait 2 weeks) I tolerated ok

Week Six:
Add Beef and Pork (if tolerated, otherwise waits 2 weeks) I tolerated ok

**They were not clear on leafy and raw vegetables, so that is why I asked the question

Was told to avoid Fat & Starches where possible, so I eat very little bread, potatoes or Rice. (But I can tolerate all of them)

I eat NO refined Sugar (Cakes, Ice Cream, Candy)

I don't use Protein Supplements unless I think I have not been getting enough, then I will have a protein smoothie in the evening after exercise.

Last night I went out to dinner with two other couples and ordered the "Special" which was 2 grilled pork chops and I had Mashed potatoes and gravy with Grean Beans and roll. I gave the roll away, ate one pork chop, half of the grean beans and a third of the mashed potatoes. Took the other pork chop home. But it was a normal meal.

So what I am saying is, assuming no complications and once you determine what you can tolerate, life will edge back to "normal" pretty soon.
