Found out the HARD way not ready for chix
My wife and I met at Bojangles for lunch. I conservatively ordered the "bites" (grilled chicken bites with some spices) and mashed potatoes. Well, I wasn't paying attention and do not think I chewed that first bite well enough. It immediately stopped up the works and nothing else would go down. I got Sue to get me some water cause I was choking (and hiccuping). I finally had to go to the bathroom and purge. Whew....that was not pleasant.
I consider myself lucky since that was the first bad incident I have had.
It brings me to a question though. The RNY does not modify the way in which food passes down the esophagus and into the stomach. It pretty much picks up from there. So why does it feel like things are "catching" on the way down?? And in this case just stopping altogether. That opening should be the same as it was before the surgery. Hmmmm.
Ok, Marie....what's the answer?

Mike,
It's not the same size actually. I think they said the opening is about the size of a nickel! So if your bite is too big, it can hang up on ya.

So you are saying that they modify the ENTRANCE to the stomach in some way?

Yep, they do. They detach the esophagus from the stomach, and then reattach the new pouch to it once it's formed. Then they attach the exit to the intestine, etc.

No, the entrance isn't modified. It takes a few months for all the swelling to go down internally and the stomach to relax. So the opening and exit are closer together and it's easy to overstuff the tiny little thing. So either you vomit when it happens, or you have pain.

Today was a good day for me to read this, because I had the same problem today. I went to a local greek restaurant for lunch and some reading before class and ordered the chicken kabobs which comes with greek salad. I knew I wasn't going to eat the whole thing or even half. I got the take out box when I got my tray, so that I put aside what I was taking home. I cut up two kabobs and figured I would be good. My big mistake was that I started off with 2 big sips of my lemonade. I was thirsty!
Well after a bite of lettuce and then about 3-4 bites of chicken which is no bigger than the size of your pinkie's nail bed. (Not the whole nail if you have long nails, just the nail bed.) I felt so gross after that, this was over about 15-20 min, but I felt gross. I ended up skipping my class at 4PM, because I was afraid I was going to get sick in class (which wouldn't be good). This was very intimidating to wanting to try chicken again, but I think if I stick with my rule of the size of chicken and no drinking first I may be okay.
So Mike, I highly recommend trying to cut up the chicken bites instead of just taking a bite, because it may end up being too big. And of course Marie is correct, the opening didn't change, just less space for it to go!

I had some serious problems with chicken last saturday, I had a little bite of a drumstick and it got stuck on my recently ballooned outlet, I had to wait for 6 hours to drink water and boy I do not want anything to do with that evil animal for another couple of weeks.

Chicken
Believe it or not, I can still have problems with chicken. If it's too dry or if I don't chew it properly, it still hurts on the way down. This isn't something that only affects early post-ops. People...chew, chew, chew your darned chicken FOREVER!

I have the same problem as Dara at times. Chicken is a kind of a crap shoot for me-sometimes I'm great, sometimes it comes back up. I still (though not as often) eat to fast or take to big of a bite or don't chew long enough and I get sick. The good news is you will learn. It takes a lot of time (for me it has) to get used to having to eat the way we do. Don't be afraid to trying chicken again just be cautious of your chewing and also the way it is prepared can make a huge difference.
