Rectal bleeding after surgey
I have a friend who had GBS on Monday. She was scheduled to come home on Wednesday but had to stay and extra day. She is having rectal bleeding. She came home today and is still having bleeding. Has anyone ever experienced this? She is pretty freaked out.

I did not and I would think that was not a good sign. I hope she is ok.

She said the Dr told her it could be where he reattached her intestines. They checked and there are no leaks. The blood is dark and that I would think is a good sign it means it is old blood. I will check with her tomorrow.
She also said she feels confident that he would not send her home if she was not safe. She is going to see how it is tomorrow and give him a call if needed.
I feel bad because I did not have any problems with my surgery. The only problem I am having is the stupid plateaus! I hate them.

I had blood when I moved my bowels after surgery for about three weeks. I was worried but my surgeon said that some bleeding after surgery is not uncommon and that it should clear up and it did. I am sure her doctor will keep an eye on her and if they felt it was very serious they would not have let her stay home or go home. I was very worried but I just had to trust my doctor and everything is fine now.

Been there
I had two GI bleeds..one upper and one lower....resulting in 2 units of blood needed and tons of merlot looking toilets.I began bleeding in the hospital day three..I thought I had to pass gas but it was all blood. They will run all sorts of nuc med tests to locate the bleeding...it can stop on its own or they may go back in(my case)
It is very scary...I didn't know how bad missing blood levels effects you.I was almost comatose(sp?)After receiving the blood over 6 hours I felt much better.
Best Wishes~
Van

Your friend will have more frequent check ups and lab levels drawn. If it's dark, then it's old blood. Your frined would not have been sent home if the labs weren't good. A little bleeding after any GI surgery isn't uncommon. Your friend may feel more weak and tired. Have your friend stay on top of it, especially if the bleeding doesn't clear up in a day or 2.

Glad things are going well for her. I couldn't go for about a week after surgery that was my big problem.

I too had the bleeding, mine began on day 2. I actually had some internal bleeding that caused mine. My blood pressure as well as my cript count went way down and they were monitoring me very closely. If my counts had dropped even one more point they were ready to go back in. I'm sure her surgeon made sure that all of her levels were fine before they released her. My counts ended up maintaining and they allowed me to go home after and extra day. The bleeding was quite alot and continued for several days after I was sent home. I am now 10 weeks out and feeling good, I'm sure your friend will be fine, but tell her to definitely keep the doctor posted of any changes.
