Default I am so hungry, blood sugar =62

I had surgery 2/1/05, lost 110lbs. Now I have had a tremendous appetite. I was at a low of 184, 7/25/05 after getting out to the hospital for complications. I was at 189 this morning. Yesterday I ate a roll of Bottle Caps candy, two Pop Tarts, two doughnuts, plus some of the right stuff that I should be eating. (I didn't dump, never have) I checked my blood sugar and it was 62. That was the lowest I have ever had. Could low blood sugar be responsible for appetite?

Wow. Just the thought of eating two Pop Tarts and two doughnuts makes me queasy! Unlike you, I would want to crawl into a bed and die.

Some other random thoughts...

Maybe you're playing a head trip on yourself after your low of 184. Psychologically, you might think you need to gain back a few pounds after being ill. Hence, the increased appetite.

Another thing to consider is the sugar and carb content of the foods you ate. The carb intake will set you up for a crab-craving vicious cycle. The more you eat, the more you crave.

When you intake a lot of sugar at once, your blood sugar skyrockets. Then, a little while later, it plummets--resulting in low blood sugar.

I really don't think low blood sugar causes increased appetite. When I've had low blood sugar, I get shaky and feel faint. There is the feeling of needing to get the blood sugar back up, but it's not an increased appetite.

Honestly, sticking to mainly protein will help regulate your blood sugar.

Happy to see that you're feeling better. Good luck!

Default Low blood sugar

Low blood sugar can absolutely make you more hungery! I have hypoglycemia (still pre-op) and if my blood sugar gets too low I go into a raging fit. I have to get anything and everything in to my mouth! I will eat a huge amount of anything until the shakes go away. I crave anything sugar because that brings it up the quickest. (But also makes it worse in the long run).

The best way to avoid a drop in blood dugar is to eat 2 servings of protein to 1 serving of carbs. NO sugar except fruit. If you keep the 2-1 ratio you will stabilize your blood sugar for quite a while.

This is probably why you are craving all the sugary foods. When I feel the shakes start to come on, the best thing to do is eat a couple of spoonfuls of peanut butter and drink a glass of milk.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I too am hypoglycemia still after surgery. It is not uncommon for my blood sugar to drop to the 30's. It can make you crazy hungry. Like insane hungry. But all you need to do it the 2-1 thing.

I have a small very small about of fruit juice (no sugar added) like 1/2 of a juicy juice box and then some protein. The juice bring the blood sugar up and the protein makes it stay there. That was the advice my doctor gave to me years ago. It still works today.

If you have a constant problem with low blood sugar's number one make an appointment with your doctor and talk to him or her about it. and number 2 eat regular meals, eat 5-6 times a day smal portions of course.
