Default Back to work soon

Lucky me, I get to go back to work soon. Anyone have any advice on what foods/drinks to bring to work? I have just started trying all my soft foods and some things are just not agreeing with me.....???

this was a tough one for me! Let me suggest that you only take things you know agree with you. DO NOT EXPERIMENT WITH NEW FOODS OUTSIDE THE HOME!!!! That is the best advice I was given although I didn't follow it and had to suffer the consequences in public . If you do well with yougurt that is quick and easy and you can add protein. Water is always a good choice and now they have the Crystal Light to go packets so you can make any bottled water crystal light in a snap. I'm a big diet snapple tea fan so that is easy to. I don't know if you can tolerate it yet but tuna is one of my favorites with a dab of mayo. I take beef jerky with me everywhere (good source of protein) and nuts (I eat soy nuts cajun flavored are good). I also am a big fan of soy crisps. They are kind of like rice cakes but with a better flavor and texture. You can put peanut butter or cheese on them. I usually just eat them plain. Campbell's soup at hand comes in a bunch of flavors and is good when your on the go and all you do is pop it in the microwave and drink out of the carton it comes in. I hope this helps you out a little! Let me know how things go for you at work!

When I started back to work, I would drink a protein shake in the morning (ready-made in a can), have an egg and bacon that I had cooked the night before (warmed up in the microwave), or some peanuts, ready-made chicken salad, roasted chicken cut into little pieces, anything that was pre-cooked that I could just warm up in the microwave. I'm lucky in that we have a full service kitchen at the school I teach at, so I can also cook things on the stove or in the oven if time permits. (Thank goodness for having foods class in middle school! We love our kitchen here!) I try to stick with foods I KNOW won't give me a problem so that I don't have to worry about getting sick at work.

Default Play it SAFE!

I have no opportunity to be sick, as I am alone in a retail store most of the day, and cannot leave the floor. I cannot risk getting sick. I usually stick with yogurt or cheese for lunch with a couple crackers. I eat my fruits and vegetables at home, cause they can be the most problematic for me.

Luckily you won't need much! I love the single serve, shrink wrapped cheese sticks. They are a little more spendy, but the premeasured ounce makes up for it for me. I just buy a bag, put them in the fridge at work, and I dont' have to think about bringing lunch for days. Of course, I am pretty tolerant of eating the same thing day after day, I don't mind having no variety, I am just happy to not be sick!!

Nicole,

I brought a yam with butter that I cooked in the microwave, V8 juice, a banana, and I bought some Triscuits to eat with string cheese or cheddarella. I know all those things agree with me.

I've been back to work for almost two weeks now. I bring an Apple and Nectarine for breakfast to eat at my desk and for lunch I bring a Healthy Choice Dinner full of vegetables and some protein. I usually can't eat it all, about half, but none of it has made me sick. Today I'm eating a bowl of Minestrone soup. I'm still having trouble getting my protein drink down without dumping, so I've been avoiding it. I know that's not a good thing, but I need to take some time to find another protein drink to try that won't make me dump.

Thumbs up

I have to plan my meals, as I work in a busy dealership, and I can't afford to be sick on something that I don't know will agree with me. I always experiment with food in the comfort of my own home, and if I have a problem I will have it at home. There have been a couple of times I've had a problem at work but I've dealt with it.

I make a couple of home made dishes and put it in individual containers and freeze some if it will go bad before I go through it. This week I made taco meat with onion and garlic... for taco salads, and lasagna. I also made some sugar free jello with bananas cut up in it. I also have string cheese in my fridge at work with some sugar free puddings in case I need a snack.

There are lots of things that you can make. If you can tolerate meat (turkey or hamburger) then make a meatloaf that would be lots of protein. I can't eat a lot of fruit at one sitting because it makes me dump. So I have to eat lots of proteins, very little fruits, and some carbs.

Hope this helps. Suzy

I went back to work less than a week after surgery so I was only doing liquids which made it pretty easy. Now that I am several months post op, I still try to keep it pretty easy. I keep sf yogurt in the fridge at work (either the cup or the smoothie) and often take leftovers from the night before (piece of meat and a couple of bites of veggies.) Another thing that I have found to be helpful is to keep a package of frozen pre-cooked meat at work (like cooked shrimp) for days when I don't have leftovers to bring. Unfortunately, when I don't have something planned for lunch I will often skip it and just drink another protein shake to make up for the protein.

The one pointer I'd give is to make sure to change things up regularly. I think I ate tuna every day for a week and now I can't stand the thought of it. Be sure to take plenty of fluids with you too so that you can stay on target with your fluid intake. That's one of the hardest things to do when back at work.
