Default Hi All I Am Back Home!!!!!!

Hi all,
Well I must say that I am back home today after my surgery on the 18th. Yesterday I could hardly walk, today I feel much better. I am trying to drink at least 4 ozs of water to keep hydrated. One question. What did you guys have for breakfast on your first day home? I also feel like I have allot of gas in my stomach but can’t seem to get it out. I feel very bloated. The nurses just told me I have to walk it off. Any thing you guys recommend to get the gas out? I feel like I am carrying 100 pounds in my stomach. I too like some of you guys thought if this was the right choice for me after I had the surgery. I did get a chance to see other people that had the surgery done at the hospital that where much heavier then I was and All in all I think I made the right decision, before getting to a much heavier point and other health problems that plague my family due to obesity.

Ray,

Welcome back to the boards. I hope your recovery is speedy! The only thing I think you can do about the gas is walk and take some anti-gas stuff. I know I had a lap hysterectomy and there is lots of gas for a lap surgery because they fill you with air to work on you. It sounds like you are doing great.

I had yogurt for breakfast. I had a lot of gas, too. It takes a while for it to work out of your system. I used GasX after I got the ok from my dr. Glad you are doing well!

Yes, walk, walk, walk that gas out! That was the most painful for me! It seems like it took forever to escape! I only ate SF jello, diluted apple juice, and chicken broth for my meals for 2 weeks after surgery. Not much else choice (Doctors orders)...

Thanks all for the kind words. so far today I have had some jello, 100% orange juice, and drinking some chicken broth. everything is going down good.

Now I know that the orange juice says its 100% and but when I read the back it says it has 28g of sugar. is this the natural suger from the oranges itself? this would not cause dumping? I was a little hesitant at first but I drank about 4oz and did not feel any ill effects. it seems that all fruit juices have some sugar in it even it it say all natural.

Ray,

Our doctors told us not citrus for several weeks out. I still only have orange juice in small amounts. I bought juicy juices that were not sugar added, We were only allowed to have clear liquids for the first weeks them creamed soups the second week and them soft foods at 10 days.

If you are going to try the yogurt thing, be sure to buy the low carb yogurt. Straight regular yogurt has a lot of sugar in it. The low carb only has about 6-10 sugars. Dumping is not fun....

Also at about weeks 2 you can have protein drinks in small amounts. Don't chug them or anything. it would be very painful to chug

Drink lots of water in between meals and walk and rest. Then repeat the process.

The first 2 weeks is more about water and rest and walking than anything else.

My one luxury was homemade chicken broth. It was so so so good and I just felt so much better after eating it. Thanks mom.....

Thanks Barbara,
I just got home from my follow up visit, and it went great. The doc checked the incisions and told me that they are healing perfect. Everyone that had surgery with me that same day went to a room with the nurse for a meeting. She answered all our questions and When I told her I was drinking OJ she said its fine as long as I can take it. The doctor is against protein drinks though. he said he would much rather have me eat some chicken or fish then to drink protein drinks all day. As every day passes I feel much better and better. The nurse advised me that I needed to get a water bottle and take it with me all day, I needed to drink more water since I complained of headaches at night that went away after I drinks water ( duh). she said not to worry about mushy food till after my first week, so that would be this friday I can switch over to mushy food, and just to focus on keeping hydrated. the doc also weighed me and I am down 20lbs since my first weigh in at the office.
