Default I'm miserable!

I had my surgery on the 11th. Ever since than I've been having a horrible time sleeping. I'm luck if I can get 2 hours in a row. Once I do fall asleep my heart starts to race my chest has a burning feeling. When I wake up my chest feels tight. My temp is low sometimes 95.1 and in total I may get 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night.

I've been to the er several times and everything comes out great on my ekg.

I forgot to add I can only take tylenol because I tried the lortab and it made my sleep apnea horrible.

Default Have you tried...?

Hi there,
Wondering if you are trying to sleep in bed or what? I tried sleeping in bed the first night and panicked because I felt so much pressure in my chest and I couldn't get up. Then I switched to a lazy boy and sleep for a couple of hours at a time, but I'm on the Lortab and it makes me sleepy. I also have sleep apnea, but not having any problems with it because I am semi-reclined in the lazy boy. I am only 3 days post-op (and also on Lovenox), but I thought I might see if you were trying to sleep flat. I don't plan on trying to sleep in my bed for quite a while. Barbie

Sweetheart, have you tried using an extra pillow or two to elevate your top half?

I am not a good sleeper in any case, but for the first nearly three weeks after my surgery, I could not sleep! So, I feel your frustration! I slept sitting up with three pillows behind me and one under each arm so I could rest without my arms falling asleep. But I slept about two hours to four hours a night, broken into an half hour here, an hour there for the first three weeks!
And I was active during the day, even hiking by the end of the three weeks and still could not sleep. I had fantasies about sleeping for the first few weeks, getting deep rest and then back to life. Instead, i was Wide awake and so frustrated and I also got the flu, so then I was not able to breath and sleep, LOL.
I have to wonder if it was a reaction to the re-routing that my body was just like-What the Hell did you do to me???
I am happy to report that it got better and for the past week, I have felt tired after I run around all day and I have slept well, in fact better than usual. Now if I could only get my pouch to accept food, I would be on my way.
The only thing I can suggest to you, which I did, was don't toss and turn and go nuts, cause if you are like me, you are WIDE AWAKE and not the least bit groggy at night, get up and do something, or surf the web , read a book, rent a movie. I felt like crap from not sleeping but during the day I was out and active hoping it would help kick me to sleep the next night.

I had/have trouble sleeping as well but every day a little better.

First few days after surgery maybe an hour or two at a time. Once I was off pain meds end of first week much better!

Before surgery a nice 10 hour nap on weekends was possible...now I am restless after 6-8 hours. I also found after a week or so & I was comfortable sleeping on my side (instead of just my back) I slept much better.

Don't sweat it, take naps as needed...your sleep pattern will even out over time.

Did you know that when you are fat (there, I said it), that you can store anesthesia drugs in your body fat? Whatever they gave me to dry up the blood and body fluids in surgery, made me all antsy and my legs twitchy for a few weeks after surgery. I would try to sleep and would get all antsy - then because I was sleep deprived, I worried about it, too.

Sooooooooooo, I slept in my re recliner and took whatever drugs they would give me. I also took children's liquid Benadryl -about a tablespoon. It at least quieted my legs down.

It gets better. I promise you! And just think, you are loosing weight just sitting there!

Love you - keep pressing in.

Things will get better. I am 5 weeks post and I had to sleep sitting up also. I would have 3 or more pillows behind me, on the couch and then a small one behind my head. Sleep was very little in the beginning but does get better. I think by week 3 - 4 I tried to sleep in bed. Wasn't the best but is getting better. I woke up the other morning on my tummy. I was so shocked because I would try and be so careful with that but things are getting much better. Hang in there!!!
