Default Life Insurance.....

Hello All,

I guess I will find this out soon enough. One of my work buddies just got her life and health license. I have insurance through work on me but my husband does not. So I spoke to my hubby and volunteered that we to be her first customers, she won't break off with her own agency until the end of the year. The company she sales for is the company that I work for.

Well now I am in the midst of this. And, during the process the examiner seems truly hung up on the fact of me having had the surgery. If anything I consider myself less of a risk than I was five months ago. My weight is lower, my blood pressure is normal and my blood sugar is no longer an issue.

Has anyone else purchased a life policy following this surgery? Were you approved? I really don't need the policy because of work. But, I would carry this even if I was not with the same employer.

First of all let me tell you this is my business so I know first hand. The Life Insurance companies will not even insure you until you are one year post operative. They will then take a very close look at you. Did you have complications, do you have dumping sydrome often, etc. At that time they will look at insuring you but will rate your policy up between 2 and 6 tables which means it will cost you more. That rating can be evaluated yearly thereafter. Personally getting the lower of the table ratings will take some doing and negotiation with the insurance companies. You will need to deal with an agent who has experience in sub-standard business or does a lot of volume with their respective company/companies so they have some horsepower so to speak when they go to bat negotiating for you. You will have to apply with at least 3 companies to get competitve offers to use against the other companies. If your agent cannot do this or is a captive agent meaning he/she can only sell for one company you are not going to get a competitve policy.

I personally rebalanced my insurance portfolio at the one year mark. I was able to obtain the table 2 rating but only because I applied with 3 companies and reluctantly got the company I place the majority of my business with to match another offer. If not my insurance would have been 25% higher in cost.

I hope this helps you to obtain the coverage you are looking for, don't be disappointed if you are declined, have to wait, get postponed or highly rated.

Both my hubby and I were denied life insurance because of having surgery. Go figure, we were also denied before having surgery because we were MO.

I've had life insurance for about 5 years now. Am I required to let my insurance company know that I am having surgery? I'd rather not have my rates go up...

So we are damned if we do and damned if we don't? That doesn't seem fair at all. I have life insurance through work but plan to switch jobs in the next year. This isn't something I had considered at all yet. I was discriminated against for being MO now I'll be discriminated against for being a stapler. Excellent question!

No you already have the coverage, there is no need to let them know. This applies only to people trying to get the coverage after WLS.

Thanks everyone to your reply. I guess I will get my rejection sometime soon in the mail.

Fortunately, I carry the insurance through my options at work and did prior to the surgery. I am not anticipating going anywhere in the next 6 1/2 months. It is good to know that it will eventually be available in the near future and that I will not always be shut out.

Default Another thought

After having surgery, I needed to get health insurance, long story short my last job sucked.. anyway I found out that I was no longer eligible for private health care insurance due to surgery. However, I could enroll in a group insurance, which my employer was not offering so I was stuck. I found some loopholes and got insurance for 375 bucks a month.. but now I have insurance through my husbands work which is a group insurance and it is great.

As far as life insurance goes too.. if you have it offered through your work in a group type of plan also, you can get it no questions asked, no health screening etc..

There are no pre-screening requirements for any group insurance.. so if you can, try and do it that way.

Good luck on your search.. and you're right, it sucks!!! You are darned if you do and darned if you don't.. argh!!
