Ok, gotta ask about crackers
After reading the post regarding diet drinks, I now want to know the info on crackers early out. Anyone want to fill me in? I'm asking because I want to know what you have found or seen as a trend on here so please no one think I'm trying to debate. I just want the 'info'!
I have had crackers on occasion when I've needed crunch but now I'm concerned this isn't a good idea.
Thanks guys!

I was not allowed to have crackers until about eight weeks out, when I was moved off soft foods to a regular diet. But some doctors have them on their list of foods for the soft food stage. Which makes no sense to me, really. They aren't soft. They are hard and crunchy.
But anyway. I don't think a few crackers on occasion will cause a problem. They are high in carbs and have little protein so they aren't a good thing to eat very often.

ok, i am only a few weeks ahead of you.
yes, i will confess i have had some well chewed, whole wheat crackers on very few occasions. i have a bad ulcer - so it probably hasn't helped me - but there was a few times when my stomach was upset and angry that i tried it, i chewed it for forever, and it actually helped. shockingly, i have never not tolerated them.
now, i won't go back to my saltine days (someone said something on the coke thread about eating saltines and coke - yum! reminds me of my pregnancy) but i found that i actually tolerated the crackers, in moderation (one at an occasion) when i just felt that i couldn't eat another stupid pureed bite.
if you are going to do crackers - do not do the white ones. they will just be a ball of refined flour in your pouch. and you should probably wait a while until you are on the last stage of your surgeons diet (which i am not on, but i have been on pureed foods for FOREVER, so... it can be frusterating).

i think basically, the concern is just that the carb monster will rear its ugly head and cause you problems - we still have to work to get the weight off, even if we have had surgery.

The ones I have tried are the Special K multigrain crackers. There is approximately 1g carbs per crackers but it only takes about 8-10 of them (they are small) to get what I need from them (crunch mainly). And this is on occasion, not daily.
If you know of any reason this wouldn't be a good idea, please let me know.

lol- on my meal plan giving to me by my nut/surgeons office they actually had me able to eat crackers(saltines) with cheese after 2 weeks out...seemed a little weird to me so i turned to TT. I stayed away.
I have now just started using whole grain crackers while making crab or tuna cakes..helps them stick and gives the a little crunch. i think moderation is everything...if someone is eating crackers every day...well they should probaly throw out the box
sorry didnt see your post, beofre mine went up. i think multi grain is good for you...and with only 1g of carbs thats real good i would think?

I did have some earlier post op around 6 weeks or so, but, being 8 mths post op, I try to stay away from crackers. They have always been a sore spot for me. I have trouble stopping, and if I eat too many I feel like crap! It's way too easy to fall back into that trap. Every once in a blue moon, I'll grab a serving size (5 crackers) and not let myself grab anymore. If you are newly post op, it may not be a problem for you, but, beware for later on. Good luck!

not every day - and i don't know how big those are, but a handful seems like too much even if you are early out. maybe try 2-3 and maybe some soft cheese or something? chew them well too - you are what, only 5 weeks out or so - so this is probably too early for anything too crunchy. carbs tend to really swell up and can block the opening between your pouch and small intestine. that is why you shouldn't do them, in addition to the fact that carbs stimulate hunger. your pouch is still healing, you don't want to stretch it, or worse, by over do it disrupt that suture line he just put in to make your tummy smaller!
