Default Update on Crushed Meds

A week or so ago I posted about my difficulty with crushing meds and taking them orally. I was complaining most about bupropion, a generic form of Wellbutrin. I have been taking the Wellbutrin mostly for my migraines. I was having 10 a month and then started taking the WB XL last summer and I have had 0 migraines since then.

Anyway, I started cutting my pills in half and swallowing them after reading some of your posts about how some of you have swallowed pills since right after surgery and I thought that that would work out good for me. The taste of the crushed pill is nasty in ANYTHING.

Last night I woke up with the migraine aura and experienced a pretty bad migraine. I called my doc first thing to whine and complain and see if there is anything else I could take that would prevent the migraines, thinking that the bupopion wasn't doing the trick. I told her about me cutting the pills in half and swallowing them. She said that the abilty to swallow them was not the issue. The issue was that if you swallow, there is not enough time for them to be absorbed into your system before they make their way out. So essentially, I have been taking the same thing as Wellbutrin, because I found out from my pharmacist that it is the generic form. I just haven't been crushing it (because I'm a baby and a whiner).

Anyway, after experiencing another migraine I have determined to crush the durn things and experience a nasty taste twice a day in hopes of avoiding future migraines. All this was new to me. I must have missed it in the pre op education, so please disregard if you guys already know all this.

Thanks,

Minime

Just another little bit to be concerned with. The XL or SR formulation of Wellbutrin or Buproprion is a long acting formulation and may not be as effective crushed or broken. Talk to your Pharmacist. Regular Wellbutrin would be fine. Since you take them for Migraines this information might be mute but it is something to check into.
