Frustrated- hit plateau
Well I was doing really well for the first 3 weeks. I had gotten down to 209. For some odd reason, I went back up to 216 overnight. Must have been water retention. It took me a week to get back down to 212 and here I sit. For a week and 2 days now, my weight has gone up and down by .6 lbs. And to top it all off, today it went up by a pound from yesterday. I am at 213.6 now!
I have been getting in plenty of protein, about 60-70g/day avg. I have been walking about 2 miles/day, 1 mile of it being uphill. I am struggling with my water intake though. I was only getting in like 30oz/day, and for the last week or so I have been able to get in about 54oz/day. I have also been getting in my vitamins, although I have been forgetting my calcium some days.
Does anybody have any advice? On all my previous weight loss attempts in the past 5 years I had stopped losing and starting gaining back all the weight around 210. I am in my smallest-sized clothes that I have, which are left from those times that I had lost weight, but I am just feeling like I am stuck, like its not going to come off anymore, and I am doomed to be this weight. It is just so frustrating. And according to my doctor's plan I am supposed to lose another 26 pounds in the next 4 weeks. I don't see that happening. Does anybody have any suggestions on breaking this plateau?

I don't have any suggestions on hitting plateaus. I don't handle them well when I am on them. It sounds like you are getting in enough exercise and are increasing your water intake so that is good. I can just pass along what my counselor told me last week when I was panicking that I wouldn't lose more weight. She said if I follow the program I can TRUST that I will lose more weight. So, that is what I am trying to do. It's hard for us because we are used to getting excited about losing weight and then gaining it back again so our trust in those processes has been betrayed. This time it's different - we just have to keep remembering that.

How many calories are you getting each day? Perhaps you need to up your caloric intake a little to help your body realize its not in starvation mode?

Well, I didn't think about that. I am getting in anywhere from 600-850/day. It is sooo hard to get in any more than that. I have to eat from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed in order to do so! My surgeon says that I should be getting in 800-1200 calories/day, so I am almost within that range.

Mix it up
If you can, mix it up. What I mean by that is eat more for three days, step up your exercise, add another 1/2 mile in. Do weights instead of walking three days of the week. This has helped me.
Also, remember to measure yourself. I'm not loosing weight anymore, I'm loosing inches. I've lost a total of 2.5 yards!

Its not a plateau, its just a weightloss stall. What are you 6 weeks post op. A plateau lasts for 4 weeks or longer, anything other than that is just a stall. Be patient sugar pea.

Welcome to my world....It's your body taking a breather. I'll tell you what I had to do.
I had to weight all foods. Take in no more then 2 ozs of solid foods 4 times a day. The scale started moving again.
We will get to goal.....Eventually. Just keep reminding yourself. "It took years/months to gain my weight....It's going to take months to take it off. "
The others are right. When the pounds stop the inches start. During my plateau I lost a total of 16.5 inches.

WOW! Are you really supposed to be at at 800 - 1200 calories a day? I am getting in a little over 400. I can't imagine getting anywhwere near 800. I am 3 weeks out but I can't see how I could get in that much in 3 weeks. I have an appt with a nutritionist in a little over a week so maybe she can give me some ideas.

Nooo you should be getting 1200 calories to maintain.... not to lose. Dont focus on calories, only on protein at this point sugar pea. I intake 1200 or try to maintain right now, that should be the furthest thing from your mind.
Protein ( anywhere from 35-80 grams is good) , veggies, water... thats your mantra, okay?

At 3 weeks out I was barely getting in 200 calories/day. It has only been the last 10 days or so that I have been able to slowly build my calorie intake to the 650ish range. Yesterday I got in about 860 cals, and Sunday I got in 890. It is sooooo hard to do, but I started drinking my protein drinks again, which helps a lot. I couldn't before, because they made me gag so bad. I can swallow a mouthful of water/fluids at once now instead of tiny baby sips so I can drink them faster without having to taste them so much.
