Default Lap Band to Lap RNY - Food Issues??

If anyone out there has had the lap band and then revision to lap RNY - I have a question. Are the foods you were sensitive to after banding the same foods you couldn't handle after RNY? For instance, after I had my band I couldn't eat chicken in any way, shape or form and once in a while I was able to eat a poached egg. Is it the same after you have RNY? Does the food get "stuck" after RNY like it does after the band? I hope you understand what I mean. I'm nervous about trying new foods again once I have my RNY. Please help! Thanks!

It is my understanding the the food issues will be the same. The opening of the new stomach is still the same size. My guess is you still would have a difficult time with the chicken and eggs, but I don't know for sure.

Good for you! Can you tell me what you've experienced so far? As much as you can tell me I'd appreciate. I'm so nervous about going through this again.

You can't really be sure until you try them. There are certain days when I can eat something then I eat it the next day and I get sick. I can't do chicken either. Not at all. No matter how moist it is, how small I cut it or how good I chew my pouchie HATES it. I have tried it several times and have given up. The only way to find out what your pouchie likes is to trial and error. Try and try again... Good luck!

Did you have the band too and now the bypass? Trial and error is nothing to look forward to. I'm sure you can understand. LOL. What kind of foods can you eat? And what happens to you when your pouch gets "mad" at you?

Default Lana....

What kind of info would you like to know? I'm very new to all of this. I'm only 3 weeks post-op. I have been walking every day since surgery, with the exception of a few but I was pretty active those days doing things around the house, etc. It is a struggle to get my fluids in because I get very full, very fast....also, make sure you have a large variety of fluids because I started to get bored and couldn't stomach the ones I liked after awhile. I really make sure I get my protein in every day (scared of losing my hair). Right now I'm only doing about 25 grams because I mix it with soy milk or juice and should only have 8 oz of that per day. I can't drink my protein mixed with water (ewww) and the full 2 scoops in only 8 oz of liquid is gross too. So you have to find what works for you. I have learned to spend money on bottled water I enjoy as I'm really not buying groceries. I used to just drink water from a Brita; but now bottled water sort of feels like a treat. Fluids are VERY important. My Dr. kept me on a full liquid diet the 1st 3 weeks and I'm suppose to have a minimum of 64 oz. per day. I have a schedule that fluctuates with my work and so there were a few days I didn't get that in. I ended up back in the hospital for a day because I was dehydrated. Now I know that I have to stay awake until I have ALL my fluids in. No matter how tired I am or what time I have to be up for work! This is a struggle for me because I also have hypersomnia (similar to narcolepsy).
Ok, I feel like I'm writing a book here. Feel free to ask any questions. Also, feel free to email me individually at ChristineMP1975@msn.com just be sure to put Thinner Times in the subject line.

When I had my band in 2006 I lost a lot of hair because I just couldn't get in enough protein (and I've been depressed over that). I don't want that to happen again so I've really been investigating all kinds of protein powders, drink, etc., with the help of the wonderful people on this forum. If you don't raise your protein intake you WILL lose your hair. What kind of protein shakes/drinks have you tried? I'm so afraid it'll happen to me again this time around.

On a totally separate note - how do they treat your hypersomnia? I think my husband has it!

The only member I can think of, off the top of my head that has gone from band to bypass is Marella.. so maybe PM her and see what she says?

I know there are others that have done it, but I can't think of who, sorry.

Good luck.. like the others say, I think it really is all trial and error.. And what you can tolerate at 1 month or 2 months out or even six months out changes frequently. So what you can't tolerate now, you might do fine with at six months.

Oddly, eggs which were a standby for me early in my 'food' progression became painful from about 3 months out to about six months or so.. now I'm fine with them again. I don't know why this is, but many people report that to be the case with foods they don't tolerate well sometimes.

Good luck!
