Water.. Wait Yes/No before/After Shakes
So the title says it all..
I know with food wait 15-30 min to eat after drinking water and about 60 minutes after eating before drinking again.
Does the same hold true for protein shakes. I know they count as water intake, but since I am not worried about feeling full (keeping the food in my pouch) does it matter if I wait to drink after a shake?

I am not sure as my wls recently changed his requirements on this topic. He no longer requires his patients to stop 30 minutes before and wait 30-45 minutes after meals to drink. His reasoning on this was that as long as we just take sips we are not taking in enough to "wash" it through the pouch. He further stated that he had not found that any of his patients suffered from slower weight loss by occasionally taking sips during a meal.
However, let me also say that I am just 12 days post op & I am still on full liquids so I am basically still "drinking" my meals.

My nutritionist said it was prefered to wait. Especially when that protein shake was a "meal". You still want to make sure it stays in your pouch long enough so that your body will have optimal absorption time. If it goes threw the digestive system too fast there is question of how much of it you have really absorbed.

I always try to wait at least 30 minutes after eating. It's part of the guideline and I just don't feel all that great if I try to drink right after eating. Every now and again I will be extremely thristy after eating and I will take a tiny sip just to wet my whistle.
Everyones tolerance seems different.
Bottom line is you don't want to make your pouch empty out or get overfilled and be uncomfortable. Only you know how it will make you feel.

Thanks every one for the responses. works for me. I was trying to squeeze in a protein shake and a bottle of water before bed. So I ruled on the side of caution and skipped the post shake water. Figured the 40 g of protein was more important (at the time) than the water (I already had 70oz)..

40 grams of protein in 1 sitting? I was told we could not absorb all that in 1 meal so it would be wasted.

My NUT told me not to take in over 25g protein at a time(like in shake form) b/c our bodies will just pass the rest.... I had hoped to "chug" it all at once(all 50g's) so I wouldn't have to taste it...but it was a no go.

I take in like 60 grams in an hour or so. So i dont chug. I do believe i am getting all of the nutrients from the shake that i can. As for drinking water with it, i try not to. I cant see the benefits to do it or not to do it.. So i would wait.
