Default How is Everyone Sleeping?????

I'm not sure which one is worst, the pain from surgery or not being able to get in a comfortable position to sleep at night. I've gotten a couple of suggestions from a some people here, but so far nothing is working. This was my second night trying to sleep in my bed since I've come home from the hospital. It didn't work. I can't lay on my back (never could), can't breathe very well in that position. When I lay on my side I either get sharp pains or it feels like my guts are spilling over to one side. I tried propping pillows under my back, under my knees, everywhere, but to no success. I'm also curious, how does everyone get out of bed? Before sugery, I would pull myself out of bed normally by using my stomach muscles, but dare I not, the pain by doing so is unbearable. In the hospital, I had bed rails on the side of the bed, that really helped, I used them everytime to get in and out of bed.

Someone here suggested that I try a recliner, which I will try tonight. It's definitely easier getting up from it than the bed. I sure hope it works for I have no other suggestions to try, unless someone out there has another solution.

try the recliner and see if that works for you. i'm sorry you are so uncomfortable but this will pass. the only way i could get out of bed was to have my hubby or kids help me pull up. i hope tonight is a better night for you.

Thanks Amber....
I will try the recliner for sure. I had my finacee pull me up out of bed a couple of times, but I hate to bother him, he's so sound to sleep and I don't want to wake him, besides, I have to get up at least twice through the night to use the rest room. Hopefully the recliner is my answer.

aww man, the ONLY way I could sleep was if I was in my recliner. Try also putting a pillow under your legs before you go to sleep (in the recliner). It helps For the first couple of days I had to yell for my brother to help me up to go to the bathroom, but...hey...you just had major surgery! Once you get stronger, everything will be better I hope everything works out for ya ^__^

I just got a body pillow and put it under me halfway on one side and another small pillow against my stomach so it wouldn't feel like my stomach was going to fall off.
Good luck, I bet a recliner would be even better though, I didn't have one.

In maintenance... now I'm yo-yoing up and down 10 lbs or so. I'm trying to find out how to stay at a set weight, it's rough.

I had lots of trouble sleeping my first week because the drain that they had in me was sitting on a nerve causes my neck to hurt like hell. Once the drain came out I was ok sleeping on my side with a huge body pillow and a bunch of other pillows for support.

FINALLY !!!!.....Last night, my fiancee' worked a miracle for me. I guess he was determined to get some sleep last night so he turned our bed into a homemade hosipital bed last night and I slept like a baby. He did so by taking one of the bottom pillow cushions from our sofa and the 2 end pillows that goes along with it, he propped the 2 small end pillows against the bed and headboard, then the propped the bottom sofa cushion on top of that. Then he place a kingsize pillow under my knees. At first I was thinking, this is not going to work, I thought it was too much of a perfect set up. But I thought I would try it for his sake. I can not believe it, but I slept non-stop last night throught the night in that same position. I didn't even wake up to go to the restroom. I felt so good when I woke up and I wasn;t even sore. And because I was almost already in an upright position, I was able to pull myself self up easily. I haven't felt this good since before the surgery. And maybe it all has a lot to do with the days gone by. I'm told that you will feel better every day after the surgery. So far this has proven true.

Thanks for all your advices !!!

I had open and i am having serious trouble sleeping due to not being able to obtain a comfortable position. Bed is out of the question. I sleep about 2 hours at a time. I seem to have accepted that. A recliner continues to have me on my back. So, I understand where you are coming from

My problem was that I was a side sleeper and couldn't get comfortable on my back. I started sleeping on my side at about 1.5 weeks post-op, but I still had staples in & they pulled a little....I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who still has the staples in! Anyway, After the staples were removed, I slept on my side all nite & slept like a baby! My husband was great tho. He helped me up when I needed it. He and my sister both helped me in the rest room when I needed them. It is amazing the things our loved ones will do for us! I mean, helping us at our lowest points.....it shows how much they really love us....more than words could ever express.
